Developing a nonspecialist-led mental health intervention for female caregivers of young children in rural China
Maternal mental health issues are pervasive in rural China, yet community-based interventions are scarce. To address this gap, we developed the Thinking Healthy Extended Program , a nonspecialist-led intervention designed to promote mental health among female caregivers of children under the age of three, including mothers and grandmothers, in resource-constrained areas of China. Drawing on an adapted Stages of Implementation Science framework, t…
Maternal migration patterns and child development from infancy to early adolescence
Investing in disadvantaged children for common prosperity in China
Despite rapid economic growth in China since 1978, rural-urban inequality has widened. High levels of socioeconomic inequality can have profound implications for child development and lifelong educational equity. Using a dataset containing early childhood development (ECD) outcomes of 0- to 3-year-olds (N = 9,053) from study sites in Eastern, Central, and Western China, the study finds that the risks of cognitive, language, and motor delay are, r…
Parental investment, school choice, and the persistent benefits of an early childhood intervention
We present evidence from a randomised experiment testing the impacts of a six-month early childhood home-visiting program on child outcomes and parental investment behaviour at school entry. Two and a half years after completion of the program, we find large persistent effects on parental investment at home, as well as large effects on preschool enrolment. Children in treatment villages were enrolled earlier and in higher quality preschools, the …
The Role of Self-Esteem in the Academic Performance of Rural Students in China
The self-esteem of students may be significantly associated with their academic performance. However, past research in developing contexts on this issue is limited, particularly among early adolescents. Using a sample of 3101 students from rural primary and junior high schools in China, this study measured their self-esteem by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and explored its association with academic performance. Our findings indicate that…

Findings in Chinese Patients With Parkinson's Disease
Social media listening (SML) is a new process for obtaining information from social media platforms to generate insights into users' experiences and has been used to analyze discussions about a multitude of diseases. To understand Parkinson's disease patients' unmet needs and optimize communication between doctors and patients, social media listening was performed to investigate concerns in Chinese patients. A comprehensive search of publicly ava…
The Effect of Providing Free Eyeglasses on Children’s Mental Health Outcomes in China
If children with common vision problems receive and use eyeglasses, their educational performance rises. Without proper treatment, visually impaired children may not achieve educational gains and could suffer from poor mental health. We use a randomized controlled trial to study the impact of an eyeglasses promotion program in rural China on the mental health of myopic primary school students. Three measures of mental health are used: learning an…
