Religious Belonging, Belief, and Practice in a Multi‐Faith Context
Using the Global East Survey of Religion and Spirituality, this paper explores the prevalence of multiple religious identities in Taiwan, where religion diffuses into social institutions and everyday life, leading to less exclusive affiliations. The findings indicate that a significant proportion of Taiwanese identify with multiple religions, primarily folk religion, Daoism, and Buddhism. This group displays distinctive patterns in religious beli…
Evaluation Criteria and Women's Attainment of Elite STEM Education
Research on women's underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields rarely addresses the roles of institutional gatekeepers and their screening criteria. Using full application records of the most prestigious university in Taiwan, we examine how the assessment criteria used by departments to determine admissions shape women's relative chance of entering elite STEM programs. Results from department fixed-effe…
Comparing same- and different-sex relationship dynamics
BACKGROUND: Few studies of same-sex relationships are able to capture the dynamics of these relationships from formation to dissolution, and even fewer provide evidence on these dynamics in a non-Western context. OBJECTIVE: Using retrospective relationship history data collected from a nationally representative sample of young adults, this study compares the processes of forming and terminating relationships between same- and different-sex couple…
Parent-Child Coresidence and Experiences of Romantic Relationships

Sibship Characteristics and Transition to First Marriage in Taiwan
Exploitation in Contemporary Capitalism
Using data for manufacturing firms in Taiwan, we developed a measure of exploitation and analyzed its prevalence in the labor force. Our results indicated that almost two-thirds of the firms in our sample exploit at least some of their workers. For these firms, the average profit rate is 34 percent, but three-fourths of this figure derives from the expropriated wages of their workers. Female and blue-collar workers are the largest groups that are…
Gender, Sibship Structure, and Educational Inequality in Taiwan
This study examines how sibship characteristics affect educational attainment in Taiwan. Using a multilevel analysis of a sibling sample of 12,715 observations from 3,001 families drawn from a national survey, we investigate the effects of family size, sibship density, birth-order rank, and sibship gender composition. The results support the argument that the effect of son preference on intrafamily educational inequality is conditional on family …
Educational Credentials and Promotion Chances in Japanese and American Organizations
The authors examine how the process of career advancement in organizations is affected by the quality of educational institutions previously attended by the employees and by employees' specializations in college. Using detailed employment records of career-track employees in a large Japanese organization and a U.S. organization, they evaluate three assessments of the effect of college quality on promotion chances : (1) the graduates of high-quali…
The Influence of Induced Abortion on Taiwanese Fertility
Data on the outcomes of more than 15,000 pregnancies originating between May 1966 and February 1969 were analyzed. The accuracy of the data was evaluated, rates of induced abortion and stillbirth were reported, and the demographic effect of induced abortion was estimated. The demographic effect was defined as the percentage increase in fertility that would have occurred in the absence of induced abortion, assuming no compensating change in altern…
