Cross‐clausal scrambling and subject case in Balkar
We use fieldwork data about cross‐clausal scrambling in Balkar (Turkic) to clarify the nature of movement and its constraints. Balkar has a variety of embedded nominalized clauses, with different subject cases and possibilities for movement. Clauses with nominative ( nom ) subjects permit cross‐clausal object extraction but not subject extraction. The Morphology of Case and Possession in Balkar
This paper uses facts about case allomorphy and possessive morphology in Balkar, a Turkic language spoken in southern Russia, to contribute to the examination of the internal structure of case. A number of recent findings in morpho-syntactic research indicate that case markers have a richer internal structure than their surface appearance typically suggests. Concealed pied-piping in Russian
We use parasitic gaps to examine left-branch extraction from nominal phrases in Russian. We observe that the interpretation of a parasitic gap in a context with left-branch extraction is the same as the interpretation assigned when an entire nominal phrase is moved. The morpho-phonology of accusative and genitive case in Barguzin Buryat
In this paper, I explore an aspect of the morpho-phonology of accusative and genitive case in the Barguzin dialect of Buryat. While most case suffixes in this language are straightforward, accusative and genitive case display considerable complexity. In the “post-truth” world, it seems possible to say anything we want. Drawing on examples from Holocaust testimony and fiction, this article argues that truth is nevertheless a central issue for readers, critics, and citizens, even if it is complex, difficult to grasp, and ethically fraught. Case-sensitive plural suppletion in Barguzin Buryat
This paper examines plural suppletion in the Barguzin dialect of Buryat (Mongolic, Russia), which occurs only in accusative and genitive noun phrases. The restricted distribution of this process, specifically its absence in oblique cases, is significant for recent research on the typology of suppletion and the feature structure of case.
