The American Revolution and the New Moral History
For the past 50 years, Bernard Bailyn’s The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967) and Gordon S. Wood’s The Creation of the American Republic (1969) have dominated scholarship on the American Revolution. Surely, though, it should not be the case today that the best books on the Revolution were written in the 1960s. This article develops a new methodological approach to the study of history, one that I call the “new moral history.” …
John Locke and the American Mind
This article reopens for the purpose of closing the long-standing debate over Locke’s influence on Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence, and the formation of America’s revolutionary mind. Its aim is to shed new light with new evidence on this rather timeworn controversy. In particular, I examine the sources and purposes of the Declaration from an entirely new perspective, that is, from the perspective of Jefferson’s post-1800 contemporaries…

Neoconservatism: An Obituary for an Idea
An obituary so soon! Surely the reports of neoconservatism's death are greatly exaggerated. C. Bradley Thompson has written (with Yaron Brook) the most comprehensive and original analysis of neoconservatism yet published and in the process has dealt it a mortal blow. Neoconservatism: An Obituary for an Idea reveals publicly for the first time what the neocons call their philosophy of governance--their plan for governing America. This book explica…

Introduction: The Promise of Apathy
This essay is the journal editor's introduction to part 3 of an ongoing symposium on quietism. With reference to writings of James Joyce, Francis Picabia, J. M. Coetzee, Charles Taylor, Alasdair MacIntyre, Elaine Pagels, and Karen King-and with extended reference to Jonathan Lear's study of "cultural devastation," Radical Hope-Jeffrey Perl explores the possibility that the fear of anomie ("anomiphobia") is misplaced. He argues that, in comparison…
Quietism from the Side of Happiness
Tolstoy writes in a letter to his friend A. A. Fet that what he has written in War and Peace, "especially in the epilogue," is also said by Schopenhauer in The World as Will and Representation. Tolstoy adds, however, that Schopenhauer approaches "it from the other side." Schopenhauer does indeed say much the same thing as Tolstoy says in his epilogue and elsewhere about history and the will. Each of these authors argues that history is not progre…

Young John Adams and the New Philosophic Rationalism
URING his retirement years, John Adams was fond of saying that the War of Independence was a consequence of the American Revolution. The real revolution, he declared, had taken place in the minds and hearts of the colonists in the decade or two before I776. What he meant by this evocative statement and how he understood the sources and nature of America's Revolutionary transformation have long intrigued historians. In an i8i8 letter to Hezekiah N…

John Adams and the Coming of the French Revolution
The eighteenth-century fin-de-siecle was a turning point modern history. The New World had shaken the Old with a revolutionary model for the destruction of the ancien regime. This was the age of revolutions and constitutions, and John Adams had stood front stage and center the drama, dabbling as he said, in so many Revolutions America, Holland and France.l Toward the end of his life, however, Adams was not at all optimistic about the future. In 1…
John Adams's Machiavellian Moment
John Adams was unique among the Founding Fathers in that he actually read and took seriously Machiavelli's ideas. In his Defence of the Constitutions of the United States, Adams quoted extensively from Machiavelli and he openly acknowledged an intellectual debt to the Florentine statesman. Adams praised Machiavelli for having been “the first” to have “revived the ancient politics” and he insisted that the “world” was much indebted to Machiavelli …
