  • Inventions of Nemesis: Utopia, Indignation, and Justice

    Open Access•Douglas Mao•BOOK•Inventions of Nemesis•2020

Examining literary and philosophical writing about ideal societies from Greek antiquity to the present, this book offers a striking new take on utopia's fundamental project. Noting that utopian imagining has often been propelled by an angry conviction that society is badly arranged, the book argues that utopia's essential aim has not been to secure happiness, order, or material goods, but rather to establish a condition of justice in which all ha…

  • Transcolonial Bildung: George Lamming, Social Death, and Actually Existing Modernism

    Open Access•Douglas Mao•ARTICLE•Modernist Cultures•2018

This article begins by situating the semi-autobiographical narrator of George Lamming's In the Castle of My Skin amid modernist representations of child philosophers at the imperial ‘periphery’ and in relation to the figure of the ‘scholarship boy’ elaborated by Richard Hoggart. It then examines the relation between modernism and exile in Lamming's writing in light of recent work on how Lamming's rise as an author was facilitated by a contest bet…

  • Our Last September

    Douglas Mao•CHAPTER•Contemporaneity of Modernism•2015

Climate change is a phenomenon of modernity, but the technological enhancement of existence and the proliferating possibilities for the human future associated with modernness sit uneasily, at best, with the deteriorating conditions and narrowing of options for tolerable living that are anticipated for advanced climate change's regime. There is little doubt that climate change portends massive alterations to ways of living for virtually all of th…

  • Rebecca West and the Origins of A Room of One's Own

    Open Access•Douglas Mao•ARTICLE•Modernist Cultures•2014•References: 2

This essay argues that Virginia Woolf's treatment of the wellsprings of valid art in A Room of One's Own (1929) is significantly indebted to Rebecca West's exploration of similar questions in “The Strange Necessity” (1928). Noting substantial evidence that Woolf was familiar with West's text by the time she wrote Room, the essay observes that both authors argue for the power of material conditions in art-making even as they work to deflect charge…

  • The Point of It

    Open Access•Douglas Mao•CHAPTER•Utopianism, Modernism, and…•2013

This chapter is centrally concerned with two stories by E. M. Forster. One, ‘The Machine Stops’, has long been considered a classic of dystopian fiction. For George Kateb in Utopia and Its Enemies (1963), Forster’s story, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), and Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We (1924) taken together give vent to ‘almost every fear that utopian ends arouse’ (Kateb, 1963, p. 20); Tom Moylan draws the title of his 2000 study of dystopias, S…

  • The Lack of Repose

    Douglas Mao•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2009

In a dialogue whose precedents include Oscar Wilde's "Critic as Artist," two fictional professors of English take up the relationship between aestheticism and quietism. Their conversation begins with a debate on the necessity of treating sociopolitical contexts when teaching literature then moves to connections among aesthetic experience, political disengagement, inactivity, and contemplation explored by Wilde, Miguel de Molinos, Aristotle, Hanna…
