Capacious and Territorial
This article develops how the 2019 social uprising in Chile linked anti-neoliberal and anti-authoritarian causes with those dedicated to social justice in race, environmental, indigenous, labor, gender, and sex relations. Protestors, moreover, articulated their visions for change in public squares and settings. In identifying these characteristics, the article asserts that the protest movement should be understood as being both capacious and terr…
Is the public ready for a tobacco-free Ireland? A national survey of public knowledge and attitudes to tobacco endgame in Ireland
Despite low awareness, tobacco endgame support is strong in Ireland. Public appetite for radically reducing tobacco product appeal and availability combined with public views on endgame achievability subject to extended timelines should be used to re-invigorate tobacco endgame discussion and planning in countries at risk of failing to meet declared targets
Putting Neoliberalism in a Place
This paper analyzes a housing project in Santiago, Chile that now lies in ruins and has become a contested memory site. The project was once an ambitious, modernist project that housed former squatters during Salvador Allende's socialist presidency (1970-1973) and its demise has subsequently become emblematic of the violent processes of neoliberal urban restructuring that marked the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Yet efforts to mem…

Anthrohistory
Stretching back to the 1950s, interdisciplinary work between anthropology and history has taken diverse expressions. Yet it has developed with more coherence since the 1980s, largely in response to the declining promise of global modernity and the rise of poststructuralism and deconstructionism. Through a critical and contemporary engagement with this wave of scholarship, this volume challenges readers to think of work at the crossroads of anthro…
Mentalidades y políticas wingka
In this book, Augusto Samaniego Mesías and Carlos Ruiz Rodríguez attempt to reveal the mentalities, politics, and policies of the Chilean state and governing sectors toward the Mapuche throughout much of the twentieth century. They start by uncovering the fiction that the Chilean nation-state is a unitary one with a homogenous citizenry. This conception has generally not allowed for the collective rights or alternative practices of a group such a…

Developing Sustainable Peripheries
In March 1984 approximately 800 families squatted on previously unoccupied lands on the edge of Guatemala City in an area known as El Mezquital. In the following months, squatters continued to arrive, eventually forming a community of more than 25,000. This was the first major organized act of squatting that successfully established a community in the city since 1976. Dozens of other invasions-to employ the term most commonly used in Guatemala-ha…

A Simple and Efficient Binary Coding Algorithm and "C" Computer Program that Facilitate Analysis of Categorical Data
An efficient method for coding, decoding, and analyzing categorical data is presented. The binary coding algorithm and computer program allow the researcher to simultaneously code category frequencies and frequencies of responses within categories. The computer program reads the binary code and produces: (a) a printed output consisting of a complete written record of all of the subjects' responses; (b) a data file consisting of category frequency…
