Cultivating reciprocity and supporting Indigenous lifeways through the cultural transformation of natural resource management in North America
Recent decades have seen increasing calls for implementing Indigenous Knowledges (IK) in natural resource management (NRM). However, efforts have been limited by the cultural incommensurabilities between (1) NRM institutions, which are rooted in worldviews that prioritize extraction for dominant cultures and assume dominance over nature and (2) Indigenous worldviews that prioritize kincentric reciprocity with the environment. This manuscript addr…
The Language Freedom Index: A metric for policy evaluation
This article introduces a framework for systematically evaluating and comparing language rights across national contexts. We develop an index to assess the range of language freedoms, focusing on areas such as government services, education, healthcare, and media. The index compiles multiple variables into a single indicator, offering a concise measure of linguistic freedom. Our analysis shows that larger language communities typically enjoy more…
A values-centered relational science model: Supporting Indigenous rights and reconciliation in research
Addressing complex social-ecological issues requires all relevant sources of knowledge and data, especially those held by communities who remain close to the land. Centuries of oppression, extractive research practices, and misrepresentation have hindered balanced knowledge exchange with Indigenous communities and inhibited innovation and problem-solving capacity in all scientific fields. A recent shift in the research landscape reflects a growin…
On “historical unity” of Russian and Ukrainian: A linguistic perspective on language conflict and change
This paper focuses on Putin’s (2021) misguided claim regarding “historical [linguistic] unity” of Russian and Ukrainian. Their being two distinct languages is not in question, as opposed (for example) to Serbian and Croatian. However, it is important to substantiate the objective reality of those differences, taking a strong stand against unjustified claims about linguistic [unity] where there are no grounds for them. Implementing a Python-coded …
Why Distant Reading Works
To consider why distant reading works is already to invite a certain kind of misunderstanding. Readers of this essay are likely to infer from its title that I mean to discuss the theories of Franco Moretti or to defend research in cultural analytics against criticism from skeptics. Neither of those is my focus. The argument of this essay is in some ways narrower, in that I largely set aside polemical debates over "digital humanities" or the role …
Is there a text in my data? (Part 1): On counting words
This essay is the first in a two-part series. This first installment invites readers to consider a few very basic questions: what does it mean to count words in a text? What happens to the text, and to our understanding of it, when we decompose it into a series of word counts? What relation exists between the textual domain and its numerical image? Or, to restate this question with a nod to literary critic stanley fish, "is there a text in my dat…

Scotland's Poetics of Space: An Experiment in Geospatial Semantics
This paper reports on a collaborative project that develops new applications of spatial text analysis. We offer a methodology to identify and evaluate correlations between semantic and geographic distance in a printed corpus. Our work combines geographic information science (GIS) with corpus linguistics to study how places are described, how spatial categories coalesce and change, and how patterns in language correlate with patterns in geography.…

Thinking Globally But Not Acting Locally: Expert and Public Perceptions of Environmental Threats and Conservation Actions
One solution to mitigate conservation threats is to harness the collective impact of individuals changing their behavior. Due to limited resources, it is necessary to identify high impact behaviors to target in future advocacy campaigns. In this article, we followed a systematic process and asked environmental specialists and zoo visitors to list the top three global and local wildlife conservation threats and the corresponding behaviors to mitig…

Beyond Carbon, More Than Forest? Redd+ Governmentality in Indonesia
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) is an expanding global initiative oriented at slowing or reversing carbon emissions from forests in the Global South. The programme is based on the principle of payment for environmental services, where the carbon sequestration services of forests are seen to have a financial value which can be paid for through grant and market mechanisms. In this paper we explore how REDD+ is i…

A collaborative approach to embedding graduate primary care mental health workers in the UK National Health Service: Embedding primary mental health workers
The UK National Health Service (NHS) workforce has recently seen the arrival of the Graduate Mental Health Worker (GMHW) in primary care. We established a Quality Improvement Collaborative to assist in embedding this new workforce in one Strategic Health Authority Area of England. The intervention utilised 'collaborative' technology which involves bringing together groups of practitioners from different organizations to work in a structured way t…
Estimating Illegal Resource Use at a Ugandan Park with the Randomized Response Technique
Illegal resource use is a major threat to conservation in protected areas throughout the world, yet accurately estimating the number of poachers has been difficult. People violating the law seldom identify themselves for fear of retribution; thus quantifying illegal resource use is constrained by methodological problems. We evaluate the effectiveness of the randomized response technique (RRT) with a population that is partially illiterate to asse…
Facing Up to Inequality in Latin America
Latin America in the 1990s remains the most unequal region in the world in terms of income distribution. Yet because of its changing demographics -declining fertility rates and large number of young people entering the workforce- the region now has a unique window of opportunity to reduce the income gap by accelerating the development process, putting people to work, improving education, and saving for the future. This Report assembles the availa…

Income effects of adjustment to a terms of trade disturbance and the demand for adjustment finance
This paper shows that when economic adjustment is costly, and therefore takes place gradually, it is optimal to seek external finance in response to permanent as well as transitory shocks, while at the same time adjusting to the disturbance. Sluggish adjustment also creates an asymmetric relationship between (permanent) changes in the terms of trade and optimal foreign borrowing. That is, while a permanent deterioration in the terms of trade gene…
