  • Satellite data reveal how Sudd wetland dynamics are linked with globally-significant methane emissions

Open Access•Andrew Hardy, Paul I Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Recent work has highlighted the large role of methane emissions from the Sudd wetland and surrounding ecosystems on the global atmospheric growth rate of methane since 2010. These emissions are driven by high rainfall over basin catchments linked with the positive phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole. We reconstruct flood inundation for the Sudd wetland over a 38-year period at a spatial resolution of 30 m using a new satellite Earth Observation (EO)…

  • Conditional trust

Open Access•Andrew Hardy, Mark Proctor et al.•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2022•References: 24

Mapping and responding to community perceptions should be a pre-requisite for drone activity in all public health applications and requires funding. The findings made in this study were used to design a community engagement plan providing a simple but effective means of building and maintaining trust and acceptability. We recommend this an essential investment

  • New European–Southeast Asian Research on the Region

    Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2016•References: 3

SEATIDE brought together fifty researchers from nine European and Southeast Asian institutions to research national and regional integration in Southeast Asia. Its conclusions examine the impact of the region’s past on its present, including the colonial and Cold War periods, and the persistence of pre-colonial principalities as cultural regions. Nation-building is analysed in the light of assimilation policies, while borders, transnationalism an…

  • Mapping soil moisture as an indicator of transport corridor slope instability using remotely sensed data

    Open Access•Andrew Hardy, Andrew J Hardy•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2010

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Much of the world's transport networks are located on cuttings and embankments. In the UK many of these earthwork structures were constructed in the mid-19th Century and are therefore susceptible to slope instability. Instability in transport corridors tends to manifest itself through shallow slope failures. The trigger for such failures is an increase in pore water pressure whic…

  • From a Floating World

    Open Access•Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Asian and Pacific migration journal•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This article aims to explain the origins and formation of Europe's Vietnamese communities. It argues that emigration from post-war Vietnam (1975–1995) was a result of the dismantling of two models of Vietnamese society — the southern regime and the structures of socialism. However, the migration routes owe much to Vietnam's international relations in the Cold War. Isolation by western countries led to the formation of a Vietnamese community in We…

  • Rules and Resources

Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2001•Cited by: 25

Under Vietnam's subsidy system that lasted until the late 1980s, the state made many decisions about people's lives. Among these rules were those on household registration (ho khau), which closely regulated people's movement. The doi moi reforms dismantled the state's hold on employment, but the ho khau system administered by the police remained an important tool of control over the population. It is used for the purposes of identification, eligi…

  • Strategies of migration to upland areas in contemporary Vietnam

    Open Access•Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2000•Cited by: 14

Migration has changed the face of Vietnam's highlands in the second half of the 20th century. Areas of forest and swidden agriculture, inhabited by ethnic minorities, have lost their tree cover and, especially in the Central Highlands, are planted with coffee and other commodity agriculture. Their populations now have a high proportion of lowland Vietnamese in‐migrants. This paper argues that this transformation is the product of two sets of stra…

  • The Road to Bò Rạ

    Open Access•Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2000•References: 1

An account based on fieldwork, "The Road to Bd Ra" portrays the settlement of a river valley in Vietnam's northern uplands, and also explores the relationship between settlers and other ethnic groups. A local history approach and emphasis on travel as research perspective are used to examine geographical and administrative processes common to many parts of Vietnam's upland frontier

This article uses a biography of banker and economist Paul Bernard to describe the debates that influenced economic policy makers and business circles during the last quarter century of French rule in Indochina. Bernard, from the Great Depression through to his death in 1960, exercised considerable influence on the way French leaders thought about the economy of their Southeast Asian colony and of their overseas territories as a whole. Andrew Hardy•ARTICLE•Revue française d histoire d…•1995
