Bankruptcy law is a major part of the American legal landscape. More than a million individuals and thousands of businesses sought relief in the United States' 93 bankruptcy courts in 2014, more than 27,000 of them in the Eastern District of Michigan. Important business of great consequence takes place in the courts, yet they ordinarily draw little public attention. In Adversity and Justice, Kevin Ball takes a closer look at the history and evolu…
The IPE of money revisited
Some two decades after an earlier review essay of mine, the time seems ripe to revisit the international political economy (IPE) of money. How has the study of money evolved in more recent years, and what is the understanding of international monetary politics today? The main message of this essay is – to be blunt – disappointment. Research has become increasingly insular and introspective, largely detached from what goes on in the real world. Tw…

In the club
In the club' presents a comprehensive examination of social clubs across South Asia, arguing for clubs as key contributors to South Asia’s colonial associational life and civil society. Using government records, personal memoirs, private club records, and club histories themselves, 'In the club' explores colonial club life with chapters arranged thematically: the legal underpinnings of clubs; their physical locations and compositions; their finan…
Modernising the Urban Environment
This article explores the Musi River flood in the city of Hyderabad in 1908. I argue that the flood served as a watershed moment for the native rulers of Hyderabad State (a princely state embedded within the British Raj) to rebuild Hyderabad city, and the river, along modern, Western lines

Surveying Nature
State scientific surveys are underexplored territory in environmental history, an oversight made more glaring since these projects were rich in their assumptions, methods, and legacies. This article examines Virginia's 1830s Geological Survey, asking why the state sought its benefits, how the project was organized, and what specific social and technical activities it comprised. The survey, all told, is indicative of a budding interest in and acce…
Escaping the False Binary of Nature and Culture Through Connection
In The Organic Machine, Richard White fruitfully undermined the ease of separating nature from culture by emphasizing their relationship rather than their distinct identity. Now a staple of university curricula, White’s text has become the standard bearer for a methodology that befits environmental history as well as all manner of environmental studies. With his nuanced presentation of the political, ethical, social, and technological dynamics of…
The Element of the Table
The Element of the Table:Visual Discourse and the Preperiodic Representation of Chemical Classification Benjamin R. Cohen Visual representations do things: they can sit quietly and be observed; they may aid in the performance of some activity, let's say, in science; they may act as repositories for previously compiled information; they may, through the format of their presentation, guide users or readers toward new ideas, or new practices. In sci…
On the Historical Relationship Between the Sciences and the Humanities
This article discusses popular and academic debates that turned on the merit of either science or the humanities. The author uses four cases to provide this history: the Huxley-Arnold debate of the 1880s, the science education reformation (and neglect-of-science) debates in Britain in the 1920s, the two-culture debate of the 1960s, and the science wars of recent years. Each of those debates (on one side, at least) sought to establish the supremac…
Fisheries, Wildlife, and Philosophy of Science
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences (FWS) graduate program at Virginia Tech held a student-led, discussion-based, 9-week seminar in the philosophy of science during the fall 1999 semester. This seminar presented the sociologist of science with the opportunity to investigate questions such as, How does a contemporary scientific discipline use the philosophy of science? What do scientists hope to gain from an understanding of demarcat…
