  • Mindfulness in Relationships: Eight-Week Mindfulness Intervention Associated with Decreased Negative Emotion and Increased Nonreactivity in Non-meditating Romantic Partners

Open Access•Christopher J May, Christopher May et al.•ARTICLE•Mindfulness•2026

  • Provoking thought: A predictive processing account of critical thinking and the effects of education

    Open Access•Christopher J May, Ryan Wittingslow et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In this paper, we propose that an increasingly regarded theoretical framework in neuroscience—the predictive processing framework—can help to advance an understanding of the foundations of critical thinking as well as provide a mechanistic hypothesis for how education may increase a learner’s subsequent use of critical thinking outside of an educational context. We begin by identifying a lacuna in the understanding of critical thinking: a causal …

  • Mindfulness meditation is associated with decreases in partner negative affect in daily life

    Open Access•Christopher J May, Brian D Ostafin et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 44

To date, very little research has examined the extrapersonal effects of mindfulness meditation practice. In this study, we investigated whether individual meditation practice exerted an influence on friends or romantic partners. Thirty‐five dyads completed an 8‐week single‐subject protocol using an A‐B‐A‐B design to compare non‐meditation phases with meditation phases. One member of each pair was randomly assigned to meditate daily for 15 min dur…

  • Cultivating Standards of Taste: "Aisthesis" in Liberal Arts and Science Pedagogy

Christopher J May, Christopher May et al.•ARTICLE•Configurations•2018•Cited by: 1

Cultivating Standards of Taste:"Aisthesis" in Liberal Arts and Science Pedagogy Christopher May (bio) and Ryan Wittingslow (bio) In Of the Standard of Taste, David Hume retells a story lifted from Cervantes's Don Quixote Sancho Panza, it is revealed, comes from a family with an excellent capacity for discernment in wine; it is a "quality hereditary" in his line. Indeed, Pancho declares, two of his kinsman on his father's side-the finest tasters i…

  • The Interaction of Body Morphology, Directional Kinematics, and Environmental Structure in the Generation of Neonatal Rat ( Rattus norvegicus ) Locomotor Behavior

    Christopher J May, Jeffrey C Schank•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2009

We show that modeling directional kinematics is especially important for understanding spatial patterns of behavior in an arena. In rats, although patterns of locomotion appear to be under sensory control, they may be largely if not entirely explained, during early locomotor development, by the directional kinematics of random movement together with morphological/environmental constraints. Different relative probabilities of forward movement vers…
