  • Narrating Covid and captivity in Italy

    Open Access•Monica Jansen, Stefania Basilisco•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2024

Italy's prison overcrowding became world news in early March 2020, when the COVID-19 outbreak sparked riots in prisons across the country, causing the death of 13 inmates. As a crisis narrative, the COVID-19 pandemic made visible the deep, ongoing crisis of Italy's prison system and disclosed new conditions for critical thought on the restorative potential of the penitentiary system. This article first describes the impact of COVID-19 on Adriano …

  • Postsecular Italy

Clodagh Brooks, Clodagh Brook et al.•ARTICLE•Italica•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Religion has not been displaced by the long process of secularization. Rather, as Clodagh Brook and others have argued, it has become one of the most visible and complex fault lines of the twenty-first century. Today, religious and secular discourses are entangled with each other inside a public sphere in which secular voices mingle and clash with voices from multiple faiths. This entanglement is now a significant aspect of contemporary Italian c…

    Open Access•Monica Jansen•ARTICLE•Narrativa•2020

In …

When ‘scandal’ becomes provocation The postsecular and Romeo Castellucci’s theatre of iconoclasmRomeo Castellucci’s performance On the Concept of the Face Regarding the Son of God has led to a series of violent protests coordinated by Catholic groups in France (Paris 2011, Le Mans 2018) and Italy (Milan 2012) and has been judged as being blasphemous and ‘Christianophobic'. Castellucci in the media has defended his piece using biblical terms and a…

  • Creative urbanity. An Italian middle class in the shade of revitalization

Monica Jansen•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2019

South Africa or Germany after the Second World War?Moreover, it is problematic when the author refers to state crime in Italy where 'the law has played a constitutive role in crimes against humanity' (pp.8-9), or refers to Mafia criminality in terms of 'state-sanctioned terror' (p.131).Mourning and reconciliation are central themes in the theory of transitional justice, and are recurrent themes throughout the book.Yet, the theoretical framework h…

  • Raccontare la giustizia

    Open Access•Monica Jansen, Maria Bonaria Urban•ARTICLE•Forum Italicum A Journal of…•2017•References: 9

  • Immunity and Community in Italian War Novels Set in Afghanistan

Ronald De Rooy, Monica Jansen•ARTICLE•Configurations•2017•References: 2

The concept of immunity as developed by Roberto Esposito is complementary with the category of community and contrasts the notion of security with that of external contamination. In this article, the logic of immunity is applied to two 2012 Italian war novels set in Afghanistan, namely Melania Mazzucco's "Limbo" and Paolo Giordano's "The Human Body". In these novels, the space of the Forward Operating Base's so-called "security bubble" represents…

  • Introduction

Open Access•Joost De Bloois, Monica Jansen et al.•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2014•Cited by: 2

This introduction critically addresses the historical development of operaismo/autonomism into “postautonomist” thinking. First, it argues that the very history of postautonomism allows for criticizing the notion of the “history” (or lack thereof) of theorists associated with postautonomist Marxism, such as Antonio Negri. It argues that the “all-or-nothing” characteristic of autonomism lives on in postautonomist theory's denial of mediation (Negr…

In this special section of The Italianist, we focus on the fictional rewritings of Italian history on television in the period of the Second Republic, paying particular attention to the format of the miniserie, usually a three-hour (two-episode) long series which in Italy is associated with prestige, high production values and craftsmanship, making history not only attractive for the beholder, but also a commercial success

  • Narrare le forze dell'ordine dopo Genova 2001
