Regionalism, Imperialism, and Sovereignty: West Indies Federation and the Occupation of Haiti
Examining the West Indies Federation during the twentieth century against the backdrop of the US occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934 shows the complex roots of decolonization and helps us understand the occupation as a foundational event for the twentieth-century Caribbean imaginary, much as the Haitian Revolution was for the nineteenth. The occupation is usually considered only in relation to its impacts in Haiti and the United States, but Hai…

It has become commonplace to acknowledge that alongside the development of a powerful labor movement and the nation's first political party, Jamaica's literature came into its own during the 1930s and 1940s. This article explores how the different kind of work carried out in two of the publications from this period associated with the Manley family, the newspaper Public Opinion and the literary journal Focus, speaks to the alliance but also the c…
Post-Grenada, Post-Cuba, Postcolonial: Rethinking Revolutionary Discourse in Dionne Brand'sIn Another Place, Not Here
This essay argues for understanding Caribbean postcoloniality as a particular relationship to the Caribbean revolutionary tradition embodied by the Cuban and Grenada revolutions. Looking at how Dionne Brand's In Another Place, Not Here invokes both of those revolutionary moments sheds light on what makes contemporary Caribbean literature postcolonial. In Another Place, Not Here locates itself as a postcolonial text through its relationship to the…
