  • Mother/nature

    Open Access•Frances Blair, Tom Walsh•ARTICLE•Feminist Encounters A Journal of…•2026

This paper argues that nuclear testing and industrial pollution constitute acute, intersectional, and complex forms of patriarchal violence. It does so through comparing government discourses surrounding the justification of nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean and industrial pollution in Northamptonshire. Both led to issues of infertility, miscarriage, and children born with birth defects. It proposes a new theoretical framework called ‘Interkin…

  • The Saudi Savior-Justifying Operation Decisive Storm

    Open Access•Tom Walsh•ARTICLE•Digest of Middle East Studies•2025•References: 20

This paper argues that despite the success of Saudi Arabia's use of discourse to legitimize Operation Decisive Storm, their initial bombing and blockade of Yemen, to the United States, ultimately these discourses were problematic. Via analyzing speeches from Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir, and articles from Saudi news website Arab News, this paper traces Saudi propaganda, showing the way in which it was used to justify the extr…

  • TikTok as a site of social protest in Iran’s Gen-Z uprising

    Open Access•Tom Walsh•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This paper argues that understanding the power of TikTok’s visual discourse is a crucial part of conceptualising the character, inspiration, and ambition of Iran’s Gen-Z-led uprising, both at home and across the diaspora. TikTok is a social media platform that depends on visuality. As such, it creates its own specific forms of messaging. This paper seeks to apply an innovative methodology of ‘Visual Discourse Tracing’ to the Iranian protests. It …

  • Health and economic benefits of achieving contraceptive and maternal health targets in Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and Caribbean

Open Access•Sherrie L Kelly, Tom Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

INTRODUCTION: Reducing unmet need for modern contraception and expanding access to quality maternal health (MH) services are priorities for improving women's health and economic empowerment. To support investment decisions, we estimated the additional cost and expected health and economic benefits of achieving the United Nations targets of zero unmet need for modern contraceptive choices and 95% coverage of MH services by 2030 in select Small Isl…

  • Securitisation imperatives and the exaggeration of Iranian involvement with the Houthi movement by international actors

    Open Access•Tom Walsh•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2023

Through examination of elite‐level discourse between 2014 and 2015, this paper argues that the exaggeration of Iranian involvement with the Houthis served to justify the Saudi‐led intervention in Yemen. Ironically, this had the effect of benefiting Iran, as Riyadh moved their attention away from Iranian priorities in Syria, undermined their own international credibility and spent billions of dollars on this unwinnable conflict. Iran, Saudi Arabia…

  • Discursive challenges

    Open Access•Tom Walsh, Betul Dogan‐Akkas•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2023

The three articles in this special section address several processes of legitimisation in the contemporary Arab World. They provide compelling insights into why Islamist movements moderate, how alternative political orders arise in response to issues of state legitimacy and the ways in which regional and international actors legitimise their involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts. Unifying the three articles is a motivation to understand process…

  • Dark patterns and sludge audits

    Open Access•Stuart Mill, Richard Whittle et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioural Public Policy•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Dark patterns are user interface design elements which harm users but benefit vendors. These harms have led to growing interest from several stakeholders, including policymakers. We develop a high-level analytical framework – the dark patterns auditing framework (DPAF) – to support policymaker efforts concerning dark patterns. There are growing links between dark patterns and the behavioural science concept of sludge. We examine both literatures,…

  • How to analyze visual propaganda in the Middle East

    Open Access•Tom Walsh•ARTICLE•Digest of Middle East Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 34

This paper provides an innovative approach to visual analysis in the Middle East. It addresses a fundamental problem in the fields of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Securitization Theory (ST): they largely ignore the visual. This project develops a methodology for visual analysis. Its utility is demonstrated through an examination of a Saudi propaganda video, entitled "Saudi Strike Force Video." When observing the Saudi-Iranian rivalry on …
