  • Ecological momentary assessment of daily affect, stress, and nightmare reports among combat-exposed veterans

    Open Access•Katherine E Miller, Elaine M Boland et al.•ARTICLE•Dreaming•2024

In contrast to findings found in civilian populations, daytime negative affect and stress during the day were not associated with subsequent TRN occurrences in this Veteran sample. Instead, there was evidence for a cumulative effect of negative affect on TRN occurrence, potentially driven by experiencing TRNs. Therefore, targeting TRNs specifically could have a positive impact on reducing this self-maintaining nightmare cycle

  • Salivary miRNA Expression in Children With Persistent Post-concussive Symptoms

Open Access•Katherine E Miller, James Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: Up to one-third of concussed children develop persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). The identification of biomarkers such as salivary miRNAs that detect concussed children at increased risk of PPCS has received growing attention in recent years. However, whether and how salivary miRNA expression levels differ over time between concussed children with and without PPCS is unknown. Aim: To identify salivary MicroRNAs (miRNAs) whose…

  • Lucid dreams in veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder include nightmares

Katherine E Miller, Richard Ro et al.•ARTICLE•Dreaming•2021•Cited by: 1

A previous study in military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and recurrent nightmares found a high prevalence of lucid dreaming (LD), the awareness while a dream continues that one is dreaming, and an "LD profile" characterized by frequent dream awareness and rare dream content control. Given the importance of the nightmare disturbance in PTSD, this study assessed with questionnaires the prevalence and characteristics of lucid …

  • The Financial Impact of Genetic Diseases in a Pediatric Accountable Care Organization

Open Access•Katherine E Miller, Richard Hoyt et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Background: Previous studies revealed patients with genetic disease have more frequent and longer hospitalizations and therefore higher healthcare costs. To understand the financial impact of genetic disease on a pediatric accountable care organization (ACO), we analyzed medical claims from 2014 provided by Partners for Kids, an ACO in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH; Columbus, OH, USA). Methods: Study population included ins…

  • Predictors of treatment noninitiation, dropout, and response for cognitive behavioral therapy for trauma nightmares

    Open Access•Katherine E Miller, Rachel L Micol et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2018

Baseline symptom severity on constructs targeted in treatment are the best indicators of response. Treatment initiation appears to be more significant than dropout. Identifying reasons for treatment noninitiation is needed to maximize engagement. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Unacknowledged Rape

    Open Access•Laura C Wilson, Katherine E Miller•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2016

Many sexual violence survivors do not label their experiences as rape but instead use more benign labels, such as “bad sex” or “miscommunication.” A meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the mean prevalence of unacknowledged rape and to inform our understanding of methodological factors that influence the detection of this phenomenon. Studies were identified using PsycINFO, PubMED, and PILOTS and were required to report the percentage of unackn…

  • Efficacy of a brief treatment for nightmares and sleep disturbances for veterans

Noelle E Balliett, Joanne L Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2015

Nightmares and sleep disturbances are common complaints among military Veterans (Plumb & Zelman, 2009) and may be difficult to eradicate (Forbes, Phelps, & McHugh, 2001). A treatment protocol (Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescription Therapy [ERRT]) targeting nightmares and sleep disturbances, which has been used effectively in civilian populations, was adapted for the military (ERRT-M). A pilot study evaluated the efficacy of ERRT-M in improving sl…
