Thinking About Romanticism: Romanticism in Modern European Thought and Politics
This essay follows the circuitous journey of the terms “Romanticism” and “the Romantic” from the classic period of Romantic poetry (1789-1815) to related political forms: revolution, reaction, nationalism, National Socialism, and a twenty-first century variety of anti-rational manipulation. I follow the movement from love and freedom in the Romantic poetry of 1800 to the cruelty of anti-rational politics and argue that Romanticism was not the cau…

Wiener Schmäh and the Americans
Kurt Rudolf Fischer was, perhaps more than anyone else in the postwar era, the person who connected the University of Vienna and Austrian students to American intellectual and academic life. He was a beloved teacher and a remarkable human being, who made many friends in both Austria and the United States. On May 12, 2022, the philosophy department of the University of Vienna celebrated 100 years since Kurt’s birth. The following essay was one of …
From Robert Musil to Austrian Intellectual History
My essay is a refl ection on how my work developed and how my discovery of Robert Musil was decisive for my thinking. I concentrate primarily on Robert Musil and the Crisis of European Culture: 1880–1942 (1980) and Eros and Inwardness in Vienna: Weininger, Musil, Doderer (2003). I also discuss two translation projects: Musil's essays, with Burton Pike (1990), and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's essays on the Austrian idea (2011). Much of my work appeared…

Freud's Discovery of Psychoanalysis: The Politics of Hysteria . William J. McGrath
Schopenhauer, Austria, and the Generation of 1905
Despite the substantial scholarly interest in Austrian intellectual history during the past decade, what we have learned about Austrian intellectual life remains isolated from our received models of Central European German culture. Scholars who study Austrian philosophy and literature are inclined to emphasize the “diachronic constants” of an intellectual tradition that is unfamiliar to most students of German philosophy, literature, and history.…
