The Uncertain Impact of Anglo/Latino Contact on Anglos' Immigration Policy Views: Awareness of Latinos’ Problems Is the Key
This project draws on psychological and sociological social psychology to investigate immigration policy opinions among native-born non-Hispanic Whites. Using data from a suburban Chicago-area county that has seen substantial growth in the Latino immigrant population, we examine Anglos' opinions on three dimensions of immigration policy: preferred immigration rate, resistance to immigration, and assistance for immigrants. Our central hypothesis i…

Race, Religion, and Beliefs about Racial Inequality
This article focuses on stratification beliefs and racial policy opinions among white and black Americans who differ in religious preference. First, it summarizes earlier research on white conservative Protestants and outlines characterizations of Black Protestant church congregants. It then reports patterns of stratification beliefs and racial policy opinions among blacks and whites varying in religious preference who responded to the 1996 throu…
Community Influences on White Racial Attitudes: What Matters and Why
Tracing the roots of racial attitudes in historical events and individual biographies has been a long-standing goal of race relations scholars. Recent years have seen a new development in racial attitude research: Local community context has entered the spotlight as a potential influence on racial views. The race composition of the locality has been the most common focus; evidence from earlier decades suggests that white Americans are more likely…

How White Attitudes Vary with the Racial Composition of Local Populations: Numbers Count
This research focuses on the white people's reactions to the racial composition of the local population. Multilevel modeling is applied to a micro/macro data file that links 1990 General Social Survey responses to census information about respondents' localities. On summary scales representing traditional prejudice, opposition to race-targeting, and policy-related beliefs, white negativity swells as the local black population share expands. Among…
White Backlash to Workplace Affirmative Action: Peril or Myth
This project uses 1990 General Social Survey data to address an issue that is central to current public policy debates: How is the racial perspective of whites affected by firsthand exposure to race-targeted remedies, such as workplace affirmative action? Theories giving a central role to self-interest generate predictions that race-targeted intervention will evoke white backlash. Contrary predictions are suggested by evidence that school, employ…
Interpersonal Expectations: Theory, Research and Applications
This 1993 volume brings together critical analysis of the phenomenon called interpersonal expectation - a sub-area of social psychology that studies how the expectations of one person affects the behavior of another in an interactive setting. The book is divided into three major sections: the first examines real-world applications of research on interpersonal expectations, such as in the courtroom, classroom, and operating room; the second consid…

Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny: Another Look at Three Androgyny Scoring Systems
The scoring systems for androgyny proposed by Strahan, by Kalin, and by Bryan, Coleman, and Ganong are assessed as potential supplements to main effect terms for masculinity and femininity in regression analysis. Strahan's androgyny value, the sum of M and F, is completely redundant with the two main effect terms and would have no incremental value. The androgyny scores suggested by Kalin and by Bryan, et al. would each provide some general indic…
The Black-and-White Model of Attitude Stability: A Latent Class Examination of Opinion and Nonopinion in the American Public
Latent class analysis is used to examine Philip Converse's propositions about political opinion and nonopinion in the American public. Data were taken from the 1956, 1958, 1960 and the 1972, 1974, 1976 American voter panel studies conducted by the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. Results support Converse's black-and-white model of attitude stability which posits the existence of some stable opinion holders and a group of "non…

Evaluation Apprehension, Social Desirability, and the Interpretation of Test Correlations
This paper investigates the relationship between the concepts of social desirability and evaluation apprehension. The Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale were administered to 63 Harvard and Radcliffe students. As predicted, there was a moderate negative correlation between social desirability and manifest anxiety in the (anonymous) high evaluation apprehension condition (r = −0.35, p = 0.05); and a subst…
