  • Ecosystem services in miombo woodlands: Challenges and opportunities to advance policy-relevant research

Open Access•Helder Manjate, Natasha Ribeiro et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

Over time, African communities had a close relationship with miombo woodlands, a socio-ecological system providing key ecosystem services (ES) supporting the livelihoods of more than 100 million people. Charcoal production and agriculture led to deforestation and forest degradation, contributing to the erosion of ES provided by miombo woodlands. While studies assessing ES across time and space have been published, assessments specifically targeti…

  • Pathway narratives towards a nature-positive European Union land system: Operationalising the Nature Futures Framework for policy objectives

    Open Access•Joanna Raymond, Thomas M Schmitt et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2025•References: 7

The Nature Futures Framework (NFF) aims to open up space for plural perspectives on human–nature relationships and to identify visions for people to navigate towards desirable nature-positive futures. Operationalising the NFF offers a way to explore alternative pathways to reach these futures, but such applications are currently underdeveloped. Normative narratives can describe pathways towards nature-positive futures based on environmental polic…

  • Key conservation actions for European steppes in the context of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

    Open Access•Cristian Pérez‐Granado, Ana Benítez‐López et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2025

The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM–GBF) envisions a world living in harmony with nature by 2050, with 23 intermediate targets to be achieved by 2030. However, aligning international policy and national and local implementation of effective actions can be challenging. Using steppe birds, one of the most threatened vertebrate groups in Europe, as a model system, we identified 36 conservation actions for the achievement of the KM…

  • A review of post-construction monitoring practices used in the evaluation of transmission power line impacts on birds and mitigation effectiveness, with proposals for guideline improvement

Open Access•Ricardo C Martins, Joana Bernardino et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2023

Bird mortality by collision is one of the major biodiversity impacts of transmission power lines. The European Union legislation determines that overhead power lines subject to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure should be monitored at post-construction to confirm the predicted impacts, and evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented mitigation measures. In light of the frequent calls to improve study design and quality of field dat…

  • Wildfire mitigation and adaptation: Two locally independent actions supported by different policy domains

Open Access•Maria João Canadas, Miguel Leal et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2023•References: 87

There is a broad consensus in the academic and policy communities over the need to shift the focus from fire suppression to fire prevention. To inform policies that effectively promote this shift, we distinguish between prevention actions aimed at more fire-resilient landscapes and those focused on the protection of people, i.e., wildfire mitigation and adaptation (WM&A), respectively. With the goal of discussing the usefulness of this distinctio…

  • Stakeholder perceptions of wildfire management strategies as nature-based solutions in two Iberian biosphere reserves

    Open Access•Judit Lecina-Diaz, João Campos et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2023•Cited by: 1

Increased large and high-intensity wildfires cause large socioeconomic and ecological impacts, which demand improved landscape management approaches in which both ecological and societal dimensions are integrated. Engaging society in fire management requires a better understanding of stakeholder perceptions of wildfires and landscape management. We analyze stakeholder perceptions about wildfire-landscape interactions in abandoned rural landscapes…

  • Drivers of irrigated olive grove expansion in Mediterranean landscapes and associated biodiversity impacts

Open Access•Rosana Morgado, Rui Morgado et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2022

Over the last 30 years, olive farming has experienced a fast and large-scale intensification process across its Mediterranean range, that is reshaping Mediterranean farmland landscapes with associated impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study aims to analyze irrigated olive grove spatial expansion patterns across a 27–year period in a region of Southern Portugal, by exploring its drivers, describing the involved land-use dynamics…

  • Ecological and methodological drivers of persistence and detection of bird fatalities at power lines: Insights from multi-project monitoring data

  • Assessing the potential delivery of ecosystem services by farmlands under contrasting management intensities

Open Access•Ana Buchadas, Francisco Moreira et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2022

Farming systems under contrasting management practices can contribute differently to the delivery of bundles of ecosystem services (ES) in agricultural landscapes. Low intensity farming systems, such as High Nature Value farmlands, are expected to deliver a wider range of ES, whereas landscapes under more intensive management are expected to deliver mainly provisioning services. Understanding the management practices associated with desirable out…

  • Action needed for the EU Common Agricultural Policy to address sustainability challenges

    Open Access•Guy Pe’er, Aletta Bonn et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2020

Making agriculture sustainable is a global challenge. In the European Union (EU), the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is failing with respect to biodiversity, climate, soil, land degradation as well as socio‐economic challenges. The European Commission's proposal for a CAP post‐2020 provides a scope for enhanced sustainability. However, it also allows Member States to choose low‐ambition implementation pathways. It therefore remains essential to…

  • Wildfire management in Mediterranean-type regions: Paradigm change needed

Open Access•Francisco Moreira, Davide Ascoli et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

During the last decades, climate and land use changes led to an increased prevalence of megafires in Mediterranean-type climate regions (MCRs). Here, we argue that current wildfire management policies in MCRs are destined to fail. Focused on fire suppression, these policies largely ignore ongoing climate warming and landscape-scale buildup of fuels. The result is a ‘firefighting trap’ that contributes to ongoing fuel accumulation precluding suppr…

Open Access•Kolawolé Valère Salako, Francisco Moreira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 21

Findings suggest that studies aiming at understanding relationship between current TK and cultural importance of a resource on one hand and socio-demographic attributes on the other hand should consider the resource current local and regional apparency but further its local past abundance. The study also confirms that B. aethiopum is a socio-economic important species in Benin

  • Wired: Impacts of increasing power line use by a growing bird population

Open Access•Francisco Moreira, Vitor Encarnação et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Power lines are increasingly widespread across many regions of the planet. Although these linear infrastructures are known for their negative impacts on bird populations, through collision and electrocution, some species take advantage of electricity pylons for nesting. In this case, estimation of the net impact of these infrastructures at the population level requires an assessment of trade-offs between positive and negative impacts. We compiled…
