Providers of decentralized blue-green flood adaptation measures protect others, not themselves, even in flat urban terrain
We address social dilemmas in dealing with urban pluvial floods in Berlin, Germany. The city has made little progress towards its own goal of becoming a sponge city, promoting decentralized rainwater management through blue-green infrastructure. Policy instruments in place focus on stimulating citizen's voluntary, precautionary self-protection against pluvial floods, implicitly assuming that providers and beneficiaries of decentralized, blue-gree…
Explaining emission reductions in cities: Configurations of socioeconomic and institutional factors
Cities have taken center stage in the fight against climate change. Research identified key conditions shaping how cities tackle climate change but hasn't yet addressed how such conditions interact in order to reduce emissions. The present paper contributes to filling this gap through a crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis of 34 CDP-reporting cities, identifying combinations of institutional and socioeconomic factors that are systematically…
A meta‐analysis of SES framework case studies: Identifying dyad and triad archetypes
There is a need to synthesize the vast amount of empirical case study research on social‐ecological systems (SES) to advance theory. Innovative methods are needed to identify patterns of system interactions and outcomes at different levels of abstraction. Many identifiable patterns may only be relevant to small sets of cases, a sector or regional context, and some more broadly. Theory needs to match these levels while still retaining enough detai…
Validity and validation in archetype analysis: Practical assessment framework and guidelines
Archetype analysis is a promising approach in sustainability science to identify patterns and explain mechanisms shaping the sustainability of social-ecological systems. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to developing quality standards and methodological advances for archetype analysis, archetype validation remains a major challenge. Drawing on the insights from two international workshops on archetype analysis and on broader litera…
From a Challenge to an Opportunity: Sustainability and the “Dark Side” of Social Capital in Paros, Greece
The role of social capital for socio-ecological systems is undisputed. While fostering cooperation in some communities, however, social capital can also lead to tight social control and distrust towards outsiders and new practices, contributing to the persistence of undesirable, unsustainable practices. This paper explores the challenges emerging from the “dark side” of social capital for sustainability efforts in socio-ecological systems, raisin…

Archetypical opportunities for water governance adaptation to climate change
We explore opportunities for climate adaptation in the context of water governance. We focus on opportunities linked to the provision of climate information, raising the question of whether they are limited to incremental adaptation, or can also bring about transformational adaptation. We address this question through an archetype analysis based on 26 peer-reviewed articles. In each article, opportunities are identified, coded using the social-ec…

The Patronage of Thirst: Exploring Institutional Fit on a Divided Cyprus
"We explore the links between Cyprus???s colonial past, divided present, and current water scarcity. With reference to the concept of fit, we tackle the question of whether we can observe fit in settings where institutions for collective action work differently than we would expect. We perform a secondary analysis of interview materials on Cyprus's water conflicts, extracting arguments for and against different solutions to water scarcity. Two pe…
