  • Auctions and Negotiations in Housing Price Dynamics

David Genesove, James Hansen•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We shed light on housing price inertia by investigating how the home-sale mechanism affects housing price dynamics. Using Australian data, we find that auction prices forecast better and display less momentum than negotiated prices. These findings are robust to alternative price measurements and different sample selection corrections. Motivated by microtheory that predicts different weights for buyer and seller values in auction and negotiated pr…

  • Violence/Visibility

James Hansen•ARTICLE•Resonance The Journal of Sound…•2024

In conjunction with her NEA Media Arts Residency at the Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA), artist Lorelei d’Andriole and I held the following conversation in a small, empty classroom on the fourth floor of Harder Hall on the campus of Alfred University (NYSCC). d’Andriole is an artist, educator, and writer whose work is at the intersection of intermedia and transgender studies. A day before the conversation she presented a lecture titled “Trans…

  • Modeling farmers' preference and willingness to pay for improved climate services in Rwanda

Open Access•Abonesh Tesfaye, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2023

This study aims to understand how Rwandan farmers value the improved characteristics of climate services introduced to them in a choice experiment setting. Data were collected from 1,525 household heads in November 2019. A random parameters logit model was used to analyze the data. Results suggest that Rwandan farmers value forecast accuracy, dissemination through a combination of extension agents and the Participatory Integrated Climate Services…

  • Climate risk management and rural poverty reduction

Open Access•James Hansen, Jon Hellin et al.•ARTICLE•Agricultural Systems•2019

Climate variability is a major source of risk to smallholder farmers and pastoralists, particularly in dryland regions. A growing body of evidence links climate-related risk to the extent and the persistence of rural poverty in these environments. Stochastic shocks erode smallholder farmers' long-term livelihood potential through loss of productive assets. The resulting uncertainty impedes progress out of poverty by acting as a disincentive to in…

  • Evaluating agricultural weather and climate services in Africa

    Open Access•Catherine Vaughan, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Weather and climate services (WCS) are expected to improve the capacity of Africa's agricultural sector to manage the risks of climate variability and change. Despite this, a lack of evidence prevents a realistic analysis of whether such services are delivering on their potential. This paper reviews 66 studies that have evaluated outcomes and/or impacts of agricultural WCS in Africa, highlighting areas that have received relatively more attention…

  • Urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (SDG 13)

Open Access•Bruce Campbell, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Actions on climate change (SDG 13), including in the food system, are crucial. SDG 13 needs to align with the Paris Agreement, given that UNFCCC negotiations set the framework for climate change actions. Food system actions can have synergies and trade-offs, as illustrated by the case for nitrogen fertiliser. SDG 13 actions that reduce emissions can have positive impacts on other SDGs (e.g. 3, 6, 12, 14, 15); but such actions should not undermine…

  • Regional climate change and national responsibilities

    Open Access•James Hansen, Makiko Sato•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Global warming over the past several decades is now large enough that regional climate change is emerging above the noise of natural variability, especially in the summer at middle latitudes and year-round at low latitudes. Despite the small magnitude of warming relative to weather fluctuations, effects of the warming already have notable social and economic impacts. Global warming of 2 °C relative to preindustrial would shift the 'bell curve' de…

  • Investigating El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and society relationships

    Open Access•Stephen E Zebiak, B Orlove et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Throughout at least the past several centuries, El Niño‐Southern Oscillation ( ENSO ) has played a significant role in human response to climate. Over time, increased attention on ENSO has led to a better understanding of both the physical mechanisms, and the environmental and societal consequences of the phenomenon. The prospects for seasonal climate forecasting emerged from ENSO studies, and were first pursued in ENSO studies. In this paper, we…

  • Assessing “Dangerous Climate Change”

    Open Access•Jeffrey E Hansen, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2013

We assess climate impacts of global warming using ongoing observations and paleoclimate data. We use Earth's measured energy imbalance, paleoclimate data, and simple representations of the global carbon cycle and temperature to define emission reductions needed to stabilize climate and avoid potentially disastrous impacts on today's young people, future generations, and nature. A cumulative industrial-era limit of ∼500 GtC fossil fuel emissions a…

  • Perception of climate change

Open Access•Jeffrey E Hansen, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

“Climate dice,” describing the chance of unusually warm or cool seasons, have become more and more “loaded” in the past 30 y, coincident with rapid global warming. The distribution of seasonal mean temperature anomalies has shifted toward higher temperatures and the range of anomalies has increased. An important change is the emergence of a category of summertime extremely hot outliers, more than three standard deviations (3σ) warmer than the cli…

  • Target Atmospheric CO

Open Access•James Hansen, Makiko Sato et al.•ARTICLE•The Open Atmospheric Science…•2008

Paleoclimate data show that climate sensitivity is ~3°C for doubled CO 2 , including only fast feedback processes. Equilibrium sensitivity, including slower surface albedo feedbacks, is ~6°C for doubled CO 2 for the range of climate states between glacial conditions and ice-free Antarctica. Decreasing CO was the main cause of a cooling trend that began 50 million years ago, the planet being nearly ice-free until CO fell to 450 ± 100 ppm; barring …

  • Global temperature change

Open Access•Jeffrey E Hansen, James Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2006

Global surface temperature has increased ≈0.2°C per decade in the past 30 years, similar to the warming rate predicted in the 1980s in initial global climate model simulations with transient greenhouse gas changes. Warming is larger in the Western Equatorial Pacific than in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific over the past century, and we suggest that the increased West–East temperature gradient may have increased the likelihood of strong El Niños, su…

  • Changing Trends in Sulfur Emissions in Asia

Geneviève Fraisse, Gregory R Carmichael et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Technology•2002

In the early 1990s, it was projected that annual SO2 emissions in Asia might grow to 80-110 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. Based on new high-resolution estimates from 1975 to 2000, we calculate that SO2 emissions in Asia might grow only to 40-45 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. The main reason for this lower estimate is a decline of SO2 emissions from 1995 to 2000 in China, which emits about two-thirds of Asian SO2. The decline was due to a reduction in industrial coal us…
