Water environment collaborative governance policy in the Yangtze River Delta
Water environment collaborative governance is an important policy agenda during the Yangtze River Delta integration. Based on collaborative theory and policy value theory, this essay finds 144 water environment collaborative governance policies in the region from 2007 to 2022. It utilizes a policy collaborative model to discuss the water environment collaborative governance state at the regional and provincial levels in this region. Results show …
The Demographics of Public Participation Access When Communicating Environmental Risk
The interaction between humans and their environment is epitomized by climate change issues. Public engagement is essential to communicating anticipated changes and shifting risks. We investigated one such risk-flooding in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. We examined the demographics of flood risk management meeting participants and found they were significantly older, English-only speakers, better educated, more affluent, and more l…

Livability for all? Conceptual limits and practical implications
Climate Change, Justice, and Adaptation among African American Communities in the Chesapeake Bay Region
In this paper, the authors present results from a study of climate change and community adaptation, focusing on two African American communities on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. These two communities are representative of small, resource-poor communities that are particularly prone to increased flooding, storms, and erosion accompanying climate change. The authors frame their research within a focus on distributive and procedural justi…

The Nature of the Beast and the Beast in Nature
This article traces conceptualizations of technology from narrow definitions to a broader understanding that encompasses the larger social and environmental context within which technology operates. In doing so, the associated social and environmental drivers and impacts of technology are identified and conclusions are drawn for the roles of technology and technology change in achieving sustainability
Distributional Impacts of Climate Change and Disasters
Climate change tends to increase the frequency and intensity of weather-related disasters, which puts many people at risk. Economic, social and environmental impacts further increase vulnerability to disasters and tend to set back development, destroy livelihoods, and increase disparity nationally and worldwide. This book addresses the differential vulnerability of people and places, introducing concepts and methods for analysis and illustrating …

Pulp Nonfiction
This article presents a modeling framework that enhances our ability to analyze the implications of policy for future sustainability of industrial systems. The framework quantifies the relationship between physical input and waste flows, capital vintage, and investment behavior in the U.S. pulp and paper industry. A regional vintage model is developed that simultaneously incorporates investment decisions, vintage structure of the capital stock, a…

Mensch and Mesh
This article discusses several relationships between technologies, industries, and socioeconomic institutions that are central to the emerging field of industrial ecology but as of yet have found little recognition. Special attention is given to the history of changes in the complexity of technologies and socioeconomic institutions, methods for dealing with this complexity conceptually and in the context of decision making, and interrelationships…
Indicators of Dematerialization and the Materials Intensity of Use
We review the major empirical analyses of the related concepts of dematerialization and intensity of use. Dematerialization refen to the absolute or relative reduction in the quantity of materials used and/or the quantity of waste generated in the production of a unit of economic output A common indicator is the intensity of material use, which is the quantity of material used per unit of economic output. Our discussion focuses on seven topics: t…
Dynamics of Material and Energy Use in U.S. Pulp and Paper Manufacturing
This article presents a dynamic computer model of US. pulp and paper production to facilitate organization of diverse industry data and to investigate the industry's likely material and energy use in the future. A set of probable scenarios of growth in paper and paperboard production, wastepaper utilization rates, and diffusion of technologies within the industry is used to assess the realm of material and energy use profiles for the period 1988‐…
A dynamic, hierarchical approach to understanding and managing natural economic systems
The study of economic systems, and their guidance towards sustainability, can be enhanced by understanding how natural systems use materials and energy at various levels of system organization, how these levels interrelate, and how interrelationships change. Towards this end, the paper introduces natural economics as an approach to understanding the dynamics of hierarchical systems. We define the concepts of natural economics to facilitate the de…

Information, order and knowledge in economic and ecological systems
Ecological and economic systems are open systems that require energy to change the thermodynamic states of materials from naturally occurring to more valued forms. These changes are accompanied by information flows and changes in the order of systems and their surroundings. In this paper, thermodynamics is used to assess these system changes and relate them to the knowledge present in a system. Particular emphasis is given to (1) the fundamental …
Thermodynamic constraints on optimal depletion of copper and aluminum in the United States
The paper proposes a methodology to integrate concepts from thermodynamics into economic models of optimal natural resource use and to empirically determine relationships between changes in thermodynamic states of materials and the use of high-quality energy sources. The integration is aimed at an assessment of technologies, substitution and technical change based on economic concepts that do justice to fundamental physical constraints. A model o…
