  • Quantifying agents’ causal responsibility in dynamical systems

    Open Access•Michael Stecher, Sarah Baumgartner et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2023•References: 5

How to ascertain causal relationships has been a key question in science and philosophy for centuries. Based on established principles of causation, we develop a quantitative measure of an agent’s causal responsibility for the state of a dynamical system: we measure the degree to which an agent’s action has caused the system state at a later point in time as the degree to which the action is necessary and sufficient for this state. Our concept ca…

    Open Access•Martin F Quaas, Sarah Baumgartner et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Nature-based solutions to insurance are in high demand. We explore the idea that natural capital has an insurance value insofar as it can mitigate the effects of uncertainty on human well-being. We present a formal model that substantiates this claim. We propose a definition for the insurance value of natural capital for a stochastic and dynamic ecosystem that provides ecosystem services for a risk-averse user. The insurance value of natural capi…

We develop a comprehensive multi-level approach to ecological economics (CML-approach) which integrates philosophical considerations on the foundations of ecological economics with an adequate operationalization. We argue that the subject matter and aims of ecological economics require a specific combination of inter- and transdisciplinary research, and discuss the epistemological position on which this approach is based. In accordance with this …

Open Access•Sarah Baumgartner, Stefan Baumgärtner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2003

The laws of thermodynamics are employed as an analytical framework within which results about society's metabolism may be rigorously deduced in energetic and material terms. We demonstrate that the occurrence of waste is an unavoidable necessity in the industrial production of desired goods. Although waste is thus an essential qualitative element of industrial production, the quantitative extent to which waste occurs may vary within certain limit…

  • Heinrich von Stackelberg on joint production

Sarah Baumgartner, Stefan Baumgärtner•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2001

In the 1970s, considerable interest arose into the study of multi-output firms and industries. However, this literature did not seem to be aware of the contribution that von Stackelberg made to the issue almost half a century earlier. This paper outlines von Stackelberg's contribution to the theory of costs under joint production. It critically assesses the place of his contribution in the modern history of the theory of joint production and it s…
