  • Historical dynamics of the Chinese dynasties

    Open Access•Sabin Roman•ARTICLE•Heliyon•2021

We develop a framework for studying state division and unification, and as a case study we focus on modelling the territorial patterns in imperial China during periods of unity and upheaval. As a modelling tool we employ discrete dynamical systems and analyse two models: the logistic map and a new class of maps, which we name ren maps. The critical transitions exhibited by the models can be used to capture the process of territorial division but …

  • The Growth and Decline of the Western Roman Empire: Quantifying the Dynamics of Army Size, Territory, and Coinage

    Open Access•Sabin Roman, Erika Palmer•ARTICLE•Cliodynamics The Journal of…•2019•References: 12

We model the Western Roman Empire from 500 BCE to 500 CE, aiming to understand the interdependent dynamics of army size, conquered territory and the production and debasement of coins within the empire. The relationships are represented through feedback relationships and modelled mathematically via a dynamical system, specified as a set of ordinary differential equations. We analyze the stability of a subsystem and determine that it is neutrally …

  • The Dynamics of Human–Environment Interactions in the Collapse of the Classic Maya

    Open Access•Sabin Roman, Erika Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 22

In this study we investigate the societal development of the Maya in the Southern Lowlands over a span of approximately 1400 years and explore whether societal dynamics linked to the depletion of natural resources can explain the rise and fall of the Classic Maya. We propose a dynamical systems model that accounts for the state of the land, population and workers employed in swidden and intensive agriculture and monument building. Optimisation of…

  • Coupled Societies are More Robust Against Collapse: A Hypothetical Look at Easter Island

    Open Access•Sabin Roman, Seth Bullock et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Inspired by the challenges of environmental change and the resource limitations experienced by modern society, recent decades have seen an increased interest in understanding the collapse of past societies. Modelling efforts so far have focused on single, isolated societies, while multi-patch dynamical models representing networks of coupled socio-environmental systems have received limited attention. We propose a model of societal evolution that…
