A Statistical Equilibrium Approach to Adam Smith’s Labor Theory of Value
Adam Smith’s inquiry into the emergence and stability of the self-organization of the division of labor in commodity production and exchange is considered using statistical equilibrium methods from statistical physics. We develop a statistical equilibrium model of the distribution of independent producers in simple commodity production using a hub-and-spoke framework that predicts both the center of gravity of producers across lines of production…
Plausible energy demand patterns in a growing global economy with climate policy
Social coordination problems in classical and Marxian political economy
This paper explores the application of information theory and game theory to questions arising in Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Karl Marx's critical reformulation of Smith's analysis in Capital. After introducing the key theoretical concepts of entropy-constrained behavior and the social interaction model, the paper applies them to some central issues in Marxian and classical political economy: the long-period method analysis of commodity pr…

Varieties of Keynesianism
Recent claims, particularly in Paul Krugman's column and blog, on the superiority of the Hicks-Modigliani version of Keynesian economics calls for a re-thinking of the issues raised in the early controversies over what Joan Robinson called "bastard Keynesianism." "Good old-fashioned Keynesian economics" (GOKE) substitutes the general and unmotivated assumption of downward money wage rigidity for the detailed examination of the varied social coord…
Rethinking Financial Capitalism and the “Information” Economy
This talk examines the popular idea that “economic growth” can continue indefinitely in post-industrial capitalist economies through the shift of labor to “service” sectors, particularly finance and information-based activities, in the light of the classical-Marxian theory of value and the related categories of productive and unproductive labor. As the generally accepted classical theory of land rent exemplifies, many types of income in capitalis…
The Political Economy of Postcrisis Global Capitalism
While the depression of the 1890s and the stagflation of the 1970s appear to be manifestations of Karl Marx's contention that the rate of profit tends to fall over time, the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Great Recession of the 2000s appear to be rooted in rising rates of exploitation. Mainstream macroeconomics represents the watershed changes in world capitalism in the 1970s as due to technical improvements in economic theory and policy, …

A Note on the Formal Treatment of Exploitation in a Model With Heterogenous Labor
The paper presents a formal generalization of Marx's analysis of exploitation and prices in economies in which categories of labor are distinguished according to their unequal ability to create exchange value. Measures of exploitation of categories of labor which are consistent with both the Price of Net Product‐Unallocated Purchasing Power (PNP‐UPP) (New Interpretation) and the traditional interpretation of Marx's theory of value are defined whi…

Recent Developments in the Labor Theory of Value
This paper reviews the historical roots of Marx's labor theory of value and some contemporary contributions to the critique of this theory. Modern commentary on Marx's labor theory of value based on dual system of parallel prices and embodied labor coefficients loses sight of the theory's roots in the philosophy of historical materialism and its function as a theory of money. Recently developed empirical single system approaches, including the Ne…

On Two Specifications of Asset Equilibrium in Macroeconomic Models
The problem of specifying asset market equilibrium conditions in a macroeconomic model is studied. Two specifications are proposed: "beginning-of-period" and "end-of-period" formulations in period models. In each case the limit of the model as the time period is shortened is rigorously calculated. It is shown that the two formulations are internally consistent, but consistent with each other only under assumptions of perfect foresight. A brief re…

The Value of Money the Value of Labor Power and the Marxian Transformation Problem
An interpretation of the labor theory of value is proposed which retains the proportionality of profit and unpaid labor time in the face of any deviations of prices from labor values. The concept "value of labor power" in the case when prices are proportional to labor values is equal both to the labor value of workers' consumption and to the product of the money wage and the "value of money," that is, the ratio of aggregate direct labor time to a…
