  • Sequestering carbon without reducing food production

    Open Access•Thiago Morello, Yiorgos Gadanakis et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2025•References: 2

The annual creation of 30,000 ha of woodland, a key component of UK's net-zero GHG emissions strategy, may drive countries exporting food to Great Britain (GB) to increase their emissions, an example of international carbon leakage. This can be mitigated by intensifying British domestic food production and our objective is to assess the viability of an intensification based on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), a land-saving technology recy…

  • Biodiversity offsets perform poorly for both people and nature, but better approaches are available

    Open Access•Mattia Mancini, Mattia C Mancini et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2024

Sustainability requires that we restore biodiversity and wider ecosystem services, yet developments such as new housing inevitably cause environmental impacts. Accordingly, developers are increasingly required to resource offset projects, delivering biodiversity or wider environmental net gains. However, analyses of offsets in England show that the large majority are conducted within development sites rather than targeted toward better opportunit…

  • An unpublished Inventory of Salt's Second Egyptian Collection from the Biblioteca Labronica in Livorno

    Mattia Mancini•ARTICLE•Egitto e Vicino Oriente•2023

This paper will present an unpublished document, kept in the Biblioteca Labronica in Livorno, that corresponds to a list of Egyptian antiquities arrived in the free port of the Tuscan city in 1825. Thanks to a comparation with other archival data, the inventory turns out to be the Italian translation of the original catalogue of the Second Collection of Henry Salt, now in the Louvre Museum, perhaps written by the British Consul General in Egypt h…

  • A review of planting principles to identify the right place for the right tree for ‘net zero plus’ woodlands

Open Access•Ian J Bateman, Karen Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2023

We outline the principles of the natural capital approach to decision making and apply these to the contemporary challenge of very significantly expanding woodlands as contribution to attaining net zero emissions of greenhouse gases. Drawing on the case of the UK, we argue that a single focus upon carbon storage alone is likely to overlook the other ‘net zero plus’ benefits which woodlands can deliver. A review of the literature considers the wid…

  • Studio dei frammenti di un Libro dei Morti di epoca Ramesside nei Musei Civici di Arte Antica di Ferrara

  • A home for all within planetary boundaries

    Open Access•Sophus zu Ermgassen, Sophus O S E zu Ermgassen et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 10

Secure housing is core to the Sustainable Development Goals and a fundamental human right. However, potential conflicts between housing and sustainability objectives remain under-researched. We explore the impact of current English government housing policy, and alternative housing strategies, on national carbon and biodiversity goals. Using material flow and land use change/biodiversity models, we estimate from 2022 to 2050 under current policy …

  • Two new tombs in the forecourt of M.I.D.A.N.05 at Dra Abu el-Naga

Marilina Betrò, Paolo Del Vesco et al.•ARTICLE•Egitto e Vicino Oriente•2021

  • Matching Local Knowledge and Environmental Change with Policy Changes in Rangeland Tenure

    Open Access•Bai Peng-Peng, Mattia Mancini et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2021

Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons has often been cited as the rationale for the privatization of pastures throughout the world, yet rangeland degradation is still widespread. A significant body of ecological research has demonstrated negative impacts from limiting herd movement through fencing. The privatization of pastures has often followed heterogeneous patterns. We use a natural experiment in common grazing areas on the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan …

  • Developing Effective Communication Skills in Archaeology

Giovina Caldarola, Astrid D'Eredità et al.•BOOK•Developing Effective Communication…•2020

"This book examines archaeology as a method for present researchers to interact and communicate with the past, and as a method for identifying the overall trends in the needs of humanity as a whole"
