Oversimplification and misestimation of nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment plants
Wastewater treatment is a major source of anthropogenic nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions. However, the current emission estimations rely on a uniform emission factor (EF) proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change based on a limited database suffering from large uncertainties and inaccuracies. To address this limitation, this study expands the database 12-fold and develops a tier-based approach. Our method considers emission variati…

Tango along the Canadian–American Border in the 1920s
From 1920 until 1933, American Prohibition altered relations between Canada and the United States. Prohibition contributed to the advent of an underground liquor economy predicated on a pattern of widespread cross-border smuggling and forced the agencies overseeing the border to bring the situation under control. I examine Canadian and American customs organizations with especial focus on the Québec–New York State and Vermont border. The pressure…

Urbanization, Colonization and Underdevelopment in the Bas-Saint-Laurent: Fraserville and the Témiscouata in the Late Nineteenth Century
This paper is based on the premise that regional differentiation is intrinsic to the formation of contemporary capitalist society. Informed by current dependence theory, we discuss the applicability of the agri-forestry concept to the experience of one Bas-Saint-Laurent sub-region (the Témiscouata) during the late XIXth Century period. The agri-forestry System, it is argued, impoverished agriculture and fragmented the county economy between a rur…

Variations in State Casualty Rates in World War II and the Vietnam War
State casualty rates from the Vietnam War and World War II were related to a number of social and economic indicators from the 1970 and 1940 census. Also included in the analysis were variables dealing with rates of entry into the military of men from different states. In World War II affluent states had higher casualty rates. In the Vietnam War the situation reversed, less affluent states had higher casualty rates. By making certain statistical …

Recent Trends in Canadian Income Tax Law
T HE purpose of this article is to point out and comment on significant developments which have taken place recently in Canadian income tax law.
