Evaluating transformative policies in complex land-use systems
Policies that facilitate sustainability transformations require knowledge about the dynamics of complex socio-ecological systems, including biophysical mechanisms and diverse human-nature relationships. Such a comprehensive evidence base can only be built by integrating multiple types of knowledges. Ontology, epistemology, and semantics are a well-established terminology to structure and facilitate such knowledge integration. Co-creation with soc…
A conceptual framework for assessing pathways towards climate neutrality and biodiversity conservation in a circular forest-based economy
This study presents a conceptual framework for assessing the sustainability of the forest-based economy and resulting synergies and trade-offs between forest harvest, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. The framework adopts a comprehensive systems approach to map economic activities and associated flows of resources and embodied environmental impacts along the value chain. It builds on methodologies for environmental-economic nat…
Mapping two centuries of forest governance in Nordic countries: An open access database
Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in the production and protection of economic, social, and environmental values. To understand current challenges and trajectories shaping future strategies within the Nordic forest sector, it is important to map and trace past and present policy and governance developments. The core contribution of this short communication is to present an open-access database that compiles key forest-related public national …
Comparing Nordic forest governance: Key informant perspectives
There is a growing call for comparative analyses of forest governance to facilitate knowledge exchange for the sustainable management of Nordic forest systems, addressing the needs of societal stakeholders in enhancing both the quality and quantity of forest resources. This study traces the development of nation-wide policy instruments implemented in four Nordic countries; Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark between 1970 and 2023, based on interv…
Soil carbon insures arable crop production against increasing adverse weather due to climate change
Intensification of arable crop production degrades soil health and production potential through loss of soil organic carbon. This, potentially, reduces agriculture's resilience to climate change and thus food security. Furthermore, the expected increase in frequency of adverse and extreme weather events due to climate change are likely to affect crop yields differently, depending on when in the growing season they occur. We show that soil carbon …
Impacts of land use on climate and ecosystem productivity over the Amazon and the South American continent
The Amazon basin is characterized by a strong interplay between the atmosphere and vegetation. Anthropogenic land use and land cover change (LULCC) affects vegetation and the exchange of energy and water with the atmosphere. Here we have assessed potential LULCC impacts on climate and natural vegetation dynamics over South America with a regional Earth system model that also accounts for vegetation dynamics. The biophysical and biogeochemical imp…
