John Locke’s Royal African Company and Bahamas Adventurer Slave Stock
This paper corrects Maurice Cranston’s account of Locke’s involvement in the slave trade by providing new evidence about how he came into possession of shares in the Royal African Company (RAC) and the Bahamas Adventurers (BA). Rather than direct personal investment, all the shares he came to own were transferred from third parties. Beginning in February 1672, Locke recorded in his personal ledger numerous payments made on his behalf to these com…

As he came, so, mysteriously, did he vanish’
In the mid-nineteenth century some merchants in Lerwick employed Moravian teachers, several from Ockbrook in Derbyshire, to teach in a series of schools that they established in the town. From 1842–54 John George Glass presided in one of their Subscription Schools, and later as parish headmaster. His teaching methods and personality, and the choir and orchestra that he established in Lerwick, ensured that he was long remembered and esteemed after…
Between the galley and plantation
This paper seeks to show that due to the transformations of the working class in seventeenth-century England, a discursive tradition emerged in devotional literature and servant manuals that valorized a specific form of servitude. By embodying the will of their masters, servants were free. By resisting their master’s will, they resembled either African slaves forced to toil on the plantations or galley slaves compelled to row for Muslim masters. …
Citizenship without states
The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, it seeks to give expression to the trends of an important debate that has not been formally articulated among anarchist theorists, namely whether or not the concept ‘citizenship’ can be meaningfully salvaged and repurposed. While many anarchist theorists have gestured at such a debate, the dimensions of this discourse have not been clarified. Secondly, in identifying the features of this debate, this…

The utilization of antenatal care among rural-to-urban migrant women in Shanghai
Many migrant women in Shanghai did not receive adequate antenatal care and initiated antenatal care later than the optimal first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Poor antenatal care utilization was associated with low socioeconomic status, education, and certain demographic factors. Tailored health education for both migrant women and their husbands should be strengthened to improve maternal health. Financing supports should be provided to improve the util…
Black hole initial data with a horizon of prescribed intrinsic and extrinsic geometry
The purpose of this work is to construct asymptotically flat, time symmetric initial data with an apparent horizon of prescribed intrinsic and extrinsic geometry. To do this, we use the parabolic partial differential equation for prescribing scalar curvature. In this equation the horizon geometry is contained within the freely specifiable part of the metric. This contrasts with the conformal method in which the geometry of the horizon can only be…
Tobacco sales in community pharmacies
This study applied multilevel modeling procedures with data from 678 community pharmacies and 382 residential census tracts in a Midwestern U.S. state to determine if two sets of variables: retail type (e.g., remotely owned, independently owned) and population demographics of the tracts in which outlets were located were associated with retail tobacco availability in community pharmacies. Data were derived from three archival sources: listings of…

Adam Smith and the Culture of Enterprise
In this article, the author considers Adam Smith's contributions to our idea of what constitutes a proper culture of enterprise. The author argues that Smith anticipated many later critiques of how markets and the division of labor alter the nature of life in modern society. The author also suggests that many of Smith's concerns stem from the tension between man's moral need for sympathy, which requires the presence of imitative practices, and co…

The Rift in the Modern Mind
Alexis de Tocqueville and Walker Percy are two of the most insightful commentators on the conditions of modernity. Placed in dialogue with one another, their work betrays startlingly parallel modes of thought and a complementary diagnosis of modernity's ills. In essence, they claim that the rise of Cartesian doubt robs men of their ability to cope with the world. They argue that by undermining the capacities for both authentic, face-to-face commu…
Consumer perceptions of safety in hospitals
The experience of adverse events negatively impacted on public confidence in hospitals. The consumer-reported adverse event rate in hospitals (7.0%) is similar to that identified using medical record review. Based on estimates from other studies, self-reported claims of adverse events in hospital by consumers appear credible, and should be considered when developing appropriate treatment regimes
Living on the Boundaries in America
In this article I examine marginalized youths' ideas about the United States, the law, and police. My interpretive analysis is based upon in-depth, unstructured interviews with juvenile parolees living in poverty in a large southwestern city. In general, these parolees could be described as uneducated, unemployed, non-white, youth gang members. Through an examination of the youths' narratives and stories about America and its legal authorities, I…
