  • Models of classroom assessment for course-based research experiences

Open Access•David I Hanauer, Tong Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

Course-based research pedagogy involves positioning students as contributors to authentic research projects as part of an engaging educational experience that promotes their learning and persistence in science. To develop a model for assessing and grading students engaged in this type of learning experience, the assessment aims and practices of a community of experienced course-based research instructors were collected and analyzed. This approach…

  • Challenges and innovations in the economic evaluation of the risks of climate change

    Open Access•James Rising, James A Rising et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 6

A large discrepancy exists between the dire impacts that most natural scientists project we could face from climate change and the modest estimates of damages calculated by mainstream economists. Economic assessments of climate change risks are intended to be comprehensive, covering the full range of physical impacts and their associated market and non-market costs, considering the greater vulnerability of poor people and the challenges of adapta…

204 children (106 boys and 98 girls) attending a Federally sponsored summer program for migrant children were the participants. About equal numbers of boys and girls at each of six ages between 7 and 12 yr. were administered the Goodenough-Harris Test, a revised version of the Children's Embedded Figures Test, and Cattell's Culture-Fair Intelligence Test. Significant correlations were found for embedded figures with Draw-A-Person scores and age. …

For Western scholars, occupied Japan remains something of an anomaly: too remote (1945–1952) for most economists and political scientists, still uncomfortably close for historians. Americanists seem intimidated by the exotic hieroglyphics on the other side, while Japan specialists shy away in fear of losing their assumed thoroughbred image should their footnotes betray too much English. Buried under a veritable mountain of grist for research, as …

  • Political Modernization and Political Culture in Japan

    Open Access•Robert E Ward•ARTICLE•World Politics•1963•Cited by: 12•References: 1

The term “political modernization” is of late encountered with increasing frequency in the literature of political science. Its antecedents are somewhat diffuse. In the most general sense, it seems to represent a specialized adaptation of scholars' long-standing concern with the question of whether the process of social change is determinate or variable, random or patterned, continuous or episodic, cyclic or evolutionary. Within this tradition “p…

    Open Access•Robert E Ward•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1956•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Throughout the years when the Meiji Constitution served for most purposes as Japan's basic law (1890-1947), it was always a matter of considerable value to the nation's constitutional scholars to have readily available an authoritative statement of the intent of the framers of that document. This was Itō Hirobumi's Kempō Gige (Commentaries on the Constitution). It played a role somewhat analogous to that of Madison's journals in our own annals of…

It comprises one of the lowest units of group organization in rural Japan and, in a practical everyday sense, plays a more immediate and important role in the daily lives of a larger proportion of the Japanese people than do any of the more formal and better known units…

There is an impressive number of well-qualified observers who feel that a basic reform of the electoral system is Japan's most urgent political need. Included among them are Diet members of all political persuasions, party functionaries, many if not most of the higher bureaucrats professionally concerned with this field, and a few academic specialists. Their reasons are simple but impressive.' They relate to four basic matters: (1) the quality of…
