Control Over Food and Autonomy in Life
Past research suggests interrelationships between housing, sense of autonomy, health behaviors, and overall mental and physical health, raising the possibility of similar interrelationships for another basic need, namely food. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between low perceived control over food acquisition, preparation, and consumption, and sense of autonomy in life in general among people with resource constraints. T…
Ontologies relevant for improving data interoperability for food loss and waste
Food loss and waste (FLW) is a global challenge. Interoperable FLW ontologies will foster more comprehensive data sharing and inform better solutions to reduce and recover excess food and to valorize wasted food and food byproducts. This review reveals that only eight ontologies currently address FLW with most emphasizing valorization. Notably, few are designed explicitly to support FLW reduction, and none facilitate food recovery, which is criti…
Cultivating an ethos of “everyday convergence”
Convergence is a research approach that aims to deeply integrate insights across disciplines to tackle complex social and societal grand challenges. However, while convergence is gaining popularity as the most integrated way to tackle such vexing challenges, researchers are not always clear how to operationalize convergence. By interviewing Network members, we collected insights about the convergence process from the Multiscale RECIPES Network, a…
Ministry Within Wounds
This article offers a framework for a practical theological ethic of congregational care to address maternal mental well-being with lament at its core. Lament catalyzes solidarity with and action on behalf of those on the margins. This ethic will be useful in the ministries of the church which are instrumental in outreach to and meeting the needs of those within marginalized communities within and outside of the Anglican Communion. The framework …
Virtual water trade
Virtual water trade (VWT) is the trade of water 'embodied' in a product. This paper explores the extent to which bilateral tariffs, World Trade Organization (WTO), and Regional Trade Agreements (RTA) reshape the trade of water across nations and alleviate water scarcity issues. To achieve this goal, we built a panel database on blue (irrigation water) and green (rainwater) VWT among paired trading countries from 1998 to 2002. Using a standard gra…
The longitudinal association between caregivers' perceived competence and autonomy and children's dietary consumption before and 10 months into the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has been stressful, potentially affecting caregivers' feeding choices. Caregivers play a role in shaping children's diets, yet few studies have explored how their competence and autonomy, defined by the Self-Determination Theory, impact children's diets. We examined the relationship between caregivers' autonomy and competence and their feeding practices before and during the first year of the pandemic. A national convenience…

Whither convergence? Co-designing convergent research and wrestling with its emergent tensions
Convergence has emerged as an important paradigm for conducting research that tackles grand societal challenges. It demands deep integration of multiple disciplines for a holistic understanding of the complexity of these challenges. In the last decade, most convergent research efforts have focused on the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). However, addressing societal challenges necessitates greater integratio…

Food Choice With Economic Scarcity and Time Abundance
Consumers with low income in the United States have higher vulnerability to unhealthy diets compared with the general population. Although some literature speculates that scarcity is an explanation for this disparity, empirical evidence is lacking. We conducted a qualitative study of food choice to explore whether scarcity-related phenomena, such as tunneling and bandwidth tax, may contribute to unhealthy dietary choices. We used participant-driv…

Do consumers care how a genetically engineered food was created or who created it
The Importance of Governance Levels in Alternative Food Networks
Focusing on U.S. red meat inspection regulations, in the context of alternative food networks (AFNs), we explore the implications of different levels of governmental governance for the number of red meat slaughter establishments in the United States. We argue that disaggregating 'the state' makes possible a more nuanced consideration of the effects of different tiers of governance. We use regression analysis with data for 40 U.S. states over 40 y…
