  • Charisma revisited

    Open Access•Jeff Bennett•ARTICLE•Ethos•2026

In 1990 Charles Lindholm published his landmark study of Charisma, shedding new light on a complex and controversial topic. Today, more than 30 years later, understanding charisma has become newly important as authoritarian leaders and populist politics have begun to reshape the global political landscape. This paper returns to Lindholm's original study to address the two phenomena Lindholm felt were most important – namely, the personality confi…

This article reviews three recent books, each of which help establish connections between the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 and the storming of the U.S. Capitol in 2021. The review highlights the ways the 9/11 attacks amplified latent nativist and xenophobic currents in U.S. society. It also shows how the prosecution of the Global War on Terror militarized new sectors of American society while simultaneously undermining trust in govern…

  • The Primitive Side of Prophesy

    Jeff Bennett•ARTICLE•Politics Religion & Ideology•2020•Cited by: 1

This paper integrates some of Anthony F. C. Wallace’s most important ideas about culture change with some of Melanie Klein’s best-known work on psychologically primitive (or early) mental states. The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, viewing what Wallace termed ‘revitalization movements’ through a Kleinian lens reveals that such movements are often far less adaptive and therapeutic than Wallace’s work generally indicates.11 A. F. C. Wallace…

    Open Access•Robert Gillespie, Jeff Bennett•ARTICLE•Journal of Benefit-Cost Analysis•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A requirement for project proponents to include a benefit-cost analysis (BCA) as a component of their environmental impact assessments is implied in planning approval legislation in New South Wales, Australia. Fulfilling that requirement in the context of three large-scale expansions of coal mines has led to the application of choice modeling to estimate values for the main environmental, social, and heritage impacts. A number of particular issue…

Resource management decisions influence not only the output of the economy but also the distribution of utility between groups within the community. The theory of Cost Benefit Analysis provides a means of incorporating distributional changes into the decision making calculus through the application of distributional or welfare weights. This paper reports the results of research designed to estimate distributional weights suitable for inclusion in…

The emergence of water markets has heralded the prospect of increased efficiency in the use of the resource for extractive purposes. However, water markets have not encompassed all elements of demand for the resource. Notably, demands for the environmental public goods provided by river flows have not been revealed in markets. State Governments have instituted regulations requiring ‘environmental flows’ to be quarantined from the market allocatio…
