  • Drivers and barriers of AI adoption and use in scientific research

Open Access•Stefano Bianchini, Moritz Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2025

We study the early adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research. Using a large dataset of publications from OpenAlex (all fields, up to 2024) and building on theories of scientific and technical human capital, we identify key factors that influence AI adoption. We find that early adopters were domain scientists embedded in AI-rich collaboration networks and affiliated with institutions with strong AI credentials. Access…

  • The private sector is hoarding AI researchers: What implications for science

    Open Access•Roman Jurowetzki, Daniel S Hain et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2025

The migration of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers from academia to industry has recently sparked concerns about its implications for scientific progress. Can academia retain enough talent to shape AI advancements and counterbalance the growing influence of corporate AI labs? Analyzing OpenAlex data, we find a significant transition of premier talent to industry roles over the past decade, particularly to major tech firms. Young, highly ci…

  • From twin transition to twice the burden? Digitalisation, energy demand, and economic growth

  • Interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence: Lessons from Covid-19

Open Access•Diletta Abbonato, Stefano Bianchini et al.•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for advancing science, fostering innovation, and solving global challenges. Recent years have seen a push for teamwork between experts from different fields and AI specialists, but the outcomes of these collaborations have yet to be studied. We focus on approximately 15,000 papers at the intersection of AI and COVID-19—arguably one of the major challenges of…

  • The emergence of a ‘twin transition’ scientific knowledge base in the European regions

Giacomo Damioli, Stefano Bianchini et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This study reveals both the spatial and the combinatory patterns of the digital and green scientific knowledge bases for the creation of new knowledge in the domain of the so-called ‘twin transition’. The recent and rapid diffusion of this twin scientific knowledge in the European regions has not adhered to clearly defined spatial patterns and has been characterised by a dynamic process of actor reconfiguration. However, regions with a strong gre…

  • Gender diversity of research consortia contributes to funding decisions in a multi-stage grant peer-review process

Open Access•Stefano Bianchini, Patrick Llerena et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2022

This study seeks to draw connections between the grant proposal peer-review and the gender representation in research consortia. We examined the implementation of a multi-disciplinary, pan-European funding scheme—EUROpean COllaborative RESearch Scheme (2003–2015)—and the reviewers’ materials that this generated. EUROCORES promoted investigator-driven, multinational collaborative research in multiple scientific areas and brought together 9158 Prin…

  • Liquidity and Precarity: The Challenges of State Partitions and Their Effects to Communities and Individuals. A Reply to Kolstø, Mohanram, and Woodward

    Open Access•Stefano Bianchini•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2022•References: 1

Under many respects, state partitions in modern times are about borders, belonging, transnational movements, and power politics. In my view, these aspects are particularly affecting the European stability since the industrial and French revolutions. With this assertion, however, I do not deny that the phenomenon of partitions had previously occurred, and still is occurring, all over the world. Historically, it has been justified by a variety of r…

  • Stefano Bianchini, Liquid Nationalisms and State Partitions in Europe (Cheltenham, UK: (Edward Elgar, 2017): A Response to Robert M. Hayden and Tvrtko Jakovina

    Stefano Bianchini•ARTICLE•Southeastern Europe•2019

With great interest and pleasure I read the constructive and insightful comments that Robert M. Hayden and Tvrtko Jakovina so generously articulated, starting from the topics I raised in my book and often expanding them to additional, broader considerations. Therefore, I am deeply grateful to both of them – as well as to Southeastern Europe – for the great opportunity they offered me to debate nationalism and state partitions, while elaborating t…

  • State-Building Politics after the Yugoslav and Soviet Collapse – The Western Balkans and Ukraine in a Comparative Perspective: An Introduction

Stefano Bianchini, Mikhaïl Minakov et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Europe•2018

This issue of the journal Southeastern Europe is dedicated to the comparison of political developments and state-building processes in the so-called Western \nBalkans and the Ukrainian case, which is an emblematic post-Soviet Eastern European country. As any other similar exercise, the comparative framework \nhas its own benefits and limitations. Methodologically and by content, this approach is, in fact, indubitably challenging. On the one hand,…

  • Liquid Nationalism and State Partitions in Europe

    Stefano Bianchini•BOOK•Liquid Nationalism and State…•2017

This timely book offers an in-depth exploration of state partitions and the history of nationalism in Europe from the Enlightenment onwards. Stefano Bianchini compares traditional national democratic development to the growing transnational demands of representation with a focus on transnational mobility and empathy versus national localism against the EU project. In an era of multilevel identity, global economic and asylum seeker crises, nationa…

Open Access•Stefano Bianchini, Giulio Bottazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2017

  • Re-examining international development assistance to Southeast Europe: Time for a post-functionalist approach

Stefano Bianchini•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast European and…•2014

In the last decade, a wide literature has critically analysed individual aspects related to the role and the impact of international aid to Southeast Europe (SEE), bringing to light both its successes and failures. However, 22 years after the communist collapse and the Yugoslav dismemberment, a broad re-examination of the aid policies pursued in SEE and of the rationale behind these policies is becoming increasingly necessary, in light of (a) the…

  • L'Europa orientale a venti anni dal 1989

    Stefano Bianchini•ARTICLE•PASSATO E PRESENTE•2009

Eastern Europe twenty years on looks retrospectively at the radical changes that have occurred in East-Central Europe since 1989. Despite the Cold War, cultural, economic and social exchanges and "métissages" had developed between the two parts of Europe. The communist collapse of 1989 offered a simultaneous opportunity of reforms and integration, given the interdependence between the "post-socialist transition" and the double process of the Eu e…
