The drivers of Higher Education leadership competence: A study of Moldovan HEI’s
This paper examines the qualities and skills needed by leaders and managers in Higher Education; the extent to which leaders and managers in 15 Moldovan Institutions perceive themselves to hold those qualities and skills; and the main drivers for holding higher levels of them. Review of the literature suggests that the qualities and skills examined belong to nine domains. The leaders and managers perceive themselves to be strongest on the Persona…

The Economic Value of Climate Information in Adaptation Decisions: Learning in the Sea-level Rise and Coastal Infrastructure Context
© 2018 The Authors Traditional methods of investment appraisal have been criticized in the context of climate change adaptation. Economic assessment of adaptation options needs to explicitly incorporate the uncertainty of future climate conditions and should recognise that uncertainties may diminish over time as a result of improved understanding and learning. Real options analysis (ROA) is an appraisal tool developed to incorporate concepts of f…

West Country Households, 1500-1700
Essays on the development of the post-medieval house, its contents and decoration. During the last forty years, South-West England has been the focus of some of the most significant work on the early modern house and household in Britain. Its remarkable wealth of vernacular buildings has been the object of muchattention, while the area has also seen productive excavations of early modern household goods, shedding new light on domestic history. Th…
Sea-level rise impacts on transport infrastructure: The notorious case of the coastal railway line at Dawlish, England
Future climate change is likely to increase the frequency of coastal storms and floods, with major consequences for coastal transport infrastructure. This paper assesses the extent to which projected sea-level rise is likely to impact upon the functioning of the Dawlish to Teignmouth stretch of the London to Penzance railway line, in England. Using a semi-empirical modelling approach, we identify a relationship between sea-level change and rail i…
Flesh becomes word: A Lexicography of the Scapegoat Or, the History of an Idea
Though its coinage can be traced back to a sixteenth-century translation of Leviticus, the term "scapegoat" has enjoyed a long and varied history of both scholarly and everyday uses. While William Tyndale employed it to describe one of two goats chosen by lot to escape the Day of Atonement sacrifices with its life, the expression was soon far more widely used to name victims of false accusation and unwarranted punishment. As such, the scapegoat f…
The development of the bottle kiln in pottery manufacture in Britain
This paper describes the types of bottle-shaped kiln used in the British pottery industry in the 1950s. It reviews the evidence of standing structures, archaeological fieldwork and documentary sources for their operation and antecedents. It concludes that their origins are to be found in developments of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and that their widespread adoption was as much for cultural as for technical reasons
The Kenneth J. Barton collection of vernacular pottery
Kenneth Barton's large collection of everyday post-medieval European ceramics has recently been donated to Somerset County Museums. The Note describes the character of the collection, the intentions behind its formation, its potential for research, and access to the collection
Christian Figural Reading and the Fashioning of Identity
This book makes an illuminating contribution to one of Christianity's central problems: the understanding and interpretation of scripture, and more specifically, the relationship between the Old Testament and the New. John David Dawson analyzes the practice and theory of "figural" reading in the Christian tradition of Biblical interpretation by looking at writings of Jewish and Christian thinkers, both ancient and modern, who have reflected on th…
Reduction fired low-temperature ceramics
The aim of this paper is two-fold: firstly to show that earthenware fired in a simple updraught kiln is the product of the kiln's tendency to produce a cycle of oxidized-reduced-reoxidized firing and to suggest that potters have deliberately exploited this cycle to control behaviour of both colloidal slips and lead glazes. Experimentation with this type of kiln has shown that the cycle defined by J. V. Noble1 for firings of Attic black-figure war…
The Packing of Medieval Floor-Tile Kilns
PREVIOUS work on medieval tile kilns firing square or rectangular floor tiles has used diagrammatic packing plans to reconstruct practice and to estimate kiln capacities. Simple practical experiment shows that these systems are unstable and impractical. A stable and reliable packing plan has been devised which takes into account many of the packing scars and damage found on the tiles in the English Heritage collection at Cleeve Abbey, Somerset. W…
