  • Energy, surplus and the economic process

Open Access•G Kallis, Claudio Cattaneo et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

This paper analyses the economic process through the concept of surplus, combining insights from ecological economics, Marxist political economy and anthropology. Humans, we argue, appropriate surplus energy with their labor from nature and apply it to transform matter into goods and services, with entropy increasing along the way. How societies distribute and expend their surpluses gives them some of their signature features. In hierarchical soc…

  • A degrowth approach to urban mobility options: Just, desirable and practical options

Claudio Cattaneo, Giorgos Velegrakis et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2022

Following Illich’s (1974) notion of convivial tools and the distinction he makes between “self-propelled transit” and “motorized transport” of mobility, we apply the emerging paradigm of degrowth to urban mobility. Based on the degrowth literature and Illich’s work, we derive principles and criteria for the mobility of a degrowth society that include institutional, energy and material use, infrastructure, local environmental impacts, social impac…

Open Access•Christine Corlet Walker, Angela Druckman et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 39

Gross Domestic Product is often used as a proxy for societal well-being in the context of policy development. Its shortcomings in this context are, however, well documented, and numerous alternative indicator sets have been developed. Despite this, there is limited evidence of widespread use of these alternative indicator sets by people working in policy areas relevant to societal wellbeing. Civil servants are an important group of indicator end-…

  • Degrowth – Taking Stock and Reviewing an Emerging Academic Paradigm

    Open Access•Martin Weiss, Claudio Cattaneo•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2017

Degrowth has evolved within a decade from an activist movement into a multi-disciplinary academic paradigm. However, an overview taking stock of the peer-refereed degrowth literature is yet missing. Here, we review 91 articles that were published between 2006 and 2015. We find that the academic degrowth discourse occupies a small but expanding niche at the intersection of social and applied environmental sciences. The discourse is shaped by autho…

  • Civil and Uncivil Actors for a Degrowth Society

    Giacomo D’alisa, Giacomo D'Alisa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 10

Within the context of the ecological crisis and technocratic drift of western nations whose overarching goal is economic growth, a plea for degrowth is emerging. In this essay, the concept of degrowth is adopted as an interpretative frame to describe a variety of forms of grassroots activism, mainly across crisis-ridden Europe. Particular attention is devoted to the distinction between forms of alternative activism that respect conventional socie…

In my PhD thesis in Environmental Science, I used fieldwork amongst "neorural" communities in the Iberian Pyrenees, and direct participation amongst "okupas" (squatters) in Barcelona, I reflect on the two methodologies (ethnographic investigation and participant observation) that I used, and I discuss their application with respect to the style and to the particular context of the investigation. The experience of living within the Barcelona squat…
