Pressing Rhythms and Korean Percussion Music
Jeff Pressing identified a group of seven jazz scale-classes that lack [0, 1, 2] subsets, but any added note would create a [0, 1, 2] subset. This article introduces Pressing rhythms in 12-beat cycles, which lack three consecutive onsets, but to which an added onset would create a three-onset run. The seven Pressing rhythm classes are prominent in p’ungmul , a genre of South Korean ensemble drumming that has been extensively researched by Nathan …

Meter
This chapter presents a sketch of an analytical model of musical meter, focused on sound rather than notation. A meter is defined as a set of pulses, and classified as an ordered set of adjacent pulse pairs, or minimal meters. The model encourages a view of meter as ever-changing and form-shaping. Metric change is defined as pulse substitution. Scripts of metric change are illustrated through analyses of brief passages of Schumann, Glass, and Gha…
A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach to Hurricane Katrina
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina resulted in long-term flooding of 80% of New Orleans, Louisiana. Mold-infested homes gave rise to concerns about increased childhood asthma. To address these concerns, a diverse community–academic partnership used a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to implement the Head-off Environmental Asthma in Louisiana (HEAL) study in 2007. The study examined the relationship between post-Katrina mold and othe…
Variables associated with grief and personal growth following the death of a child from cancer
This mixed method study explored parent and child characteristics that impact grief and personal growth in parents ( n = 119) after a child dies from cancer in Australia. Medical components of a child's cancer care including radiation treatment, referral to palliative care, and location of death had a significant impact on levels of grief. Parents' gender, religious affiliation, and education level had a significant impact on levels of personal g…

A Platonic Model of Funky Rhythms
Many popular and improvised musics project duple meter at multiple levels of a metric hierarchy, and superimpose upon them a series of three-unit spans that induce multi-levelled conflicts with that hierarchy. Adopting a real-time generative model from Pressing 1983, this paper attributes these metric conflicts to relations among the small numbers that underlie the meters. This model suggests a deep resemblance between funky rhythms and the acous…
David Lewin's Morgengruß
This title presents for the first time, an extended 1974 essay by David Lewin on 'Morgengruß', a 23 measure strophic song from Schubert's 'Die Schöne Müllerin'. The essay was central to Lewin's graduate teaching, and copies of it have circulated by hand through the music-scholarly community. Yet Lewin initially wrote it for an audience of non-specialists. In addition, the book presents a preface, introduction, and three critical essays that place…
Tonal Pitch Space and the (neo-)Riemannian Tonnetz
This article reexamines the Tonnetz as an analytical apparatus. Drawing on Fred Lerdahl's Tonal Pitch Space, which is critical of the homology of tone, chord, and key space posited by the Riemannian Tonnentz, the article proposes a hybrid spatial model that draws on both the Riemannian tradition and Lerdahl's hierarchical model. The pragmatic solution presented in this article allows for communication, reinterpretation, and relocation between tem…
Audacious EuphonyChromatic Harmony and the Triad's Second Nature
Many nineteenth-century theorists viewed triadic distance in terms of common tones and voice-leading proximity, rather than root consonance and mutual diatonic constituency. Audacious Euphony reconstructs this view and uses it as the basis for a chromatic model of triadic space, developing geometric representations from blueprints of Euler (1739) and Weitzmann (1853). The model renders coherent many passages of romantic music (e.g. of Schubert, L…
Telephone Support Groups for Isolated Bereaved Parents
Supporting the grieving and isolated demands create cost-effective solutions. Telephone support groups have attracted considerable interest, especially a suggestion that such groups may offer therapeutic benefits not available in traditional face-to-face groups. This article reviews available literature on the advantages and disadvantages of telephone networks for isolated clientele. It describes client feedback on a telephone-based initiative pi…

A Theory for All Music
Professor Rahn takes the approach to the analysis of Western art music developed recently by theorists such as Benjamin Boretz and extends it to address non-Western forms. In the process, he rejects recent ethnomusicological formulations based on mentalism, cultural determinism, and the psychology of perception as potentially fruitful bases for analysing music in general. Instead he stresses the desirability of formulating a theory to deal with a…
