  • Unforeseeable’ and ‘inevitable’: Constructions of prison suicide in Scotland’s Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiries

    Open Access•Sarah I Huque, Rebecca Helman et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Criminal Justice•2024•References: 5

Rates of suicides are on the rise in Scottish prisons. Fatal Accident and Sudden Deaths Inquiries (FAIs) carried out by sheriffs following these deaths provide a valuable source of knowledge regarding how the criminal justice system understands and responds to incarcerated people's suicides. Informed by literature in critical suicide studies and narrative criminology, we conducted an abductive, narrative qualitative analysis of 37 FAI reports of …

Ethical ways of being form in response to bodily perceptions of vulnerability. Arguments that position firearms as defensive tools have become increasingly common in debates about gun legislation over the last two decades. This rhetoric has its origin in counter-hegemonic movements like the Black Panther Party for Self-Defence, which argued that African-Americans need guns to resist state-sanctioned violence from the police. • Kristin L. Hoganson. The Heartland: An American History

    Open Access•J L Anderson•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

Many Americans on the coasts see the Midwest as “flyover country,” an insulated, isolationist, and unchanging region that embodies the American mainstream. Even in the middle states, those supposed traits are valued and enshrined as heartland myth. But instead of a static heartland buffeted by change on the coasts, author Kristin L. Hoganson contends in The Heartland that the real Midwest was and remains more borderland than hinterland, a place t…

  • Nous n'avons plus peur: La mobilisation inattendue des travailleur.ses de Ryanair

    J L Anderson, Jeremy Anderson•ARTICLE•Mouvements•2018

The story of the county farm and home bureaus has often been obscured by an emphasis on the political activities of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and how it influenced farm policy and exercised control over the countryside. For Nancy K. Berlage this traditional focus on the AFBF ignores how improvement-minded rural people organized at the local level and ultimately shaped the national organization. This article examines the ways in which American gun owners deploy a particular ethical system in their responses to instances of mass gun violence. I argue that anthropology is uniquely situated to provide a better understanding of how this ethical system is produced, thereby allowing us to move beyond the falsely dichotomous terms of the gun control debate. • Michelle Mart. Pesticides, a Love Story: America’s Enduring Embrace of Dangerous Chemicals

    J L Anderson•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2016

What has love got to do with pesticides? Quite a lot, observes Michelle Mart in Pesticides, a Love Story: America’s Enduring Embrace of Dangerous Chemicals. Americans fell in love with pesticides in the post–World War II period because they were tools to ensure abundant agricultural production at home and to affirm technological superiority abroad. The love affair endured despite evidence that the reliance on chemicals was not necessarily healthy…

Herbicides met many farmers' goals, including cutting fuel and labor costs of cultivating while boosting yields by reducing weed competition for soil nutrients, light, and moisture. In the 1940s and 1950s, experts advised farmers to only use chemicals to supplement mechanical cul…
