The Anthropocene narrative and Amerindian lifeworlds: Anthropos, Agency, and Personhood
Based on the observation that the Anthropocene narrative signifies a departure from the Cartesian nature/culture division dominant within modernist science, this article explores notions of personhood and agency among Amerindian peoples in the Amazon, the Andes, and Mesoamerica in comparison to the corresponding notions in modernist discourses. We discuss the differences in conceptualizations in relation to diverging understandings of climate cha…
Science, Knowledge and Belief. On Local Understandings of Weather and Climate Change in Amazonia
This article explores different modes of understanding such atmospheric phenomena that in English are described as 'weather' and 'climate' applying Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. In consequence, focus is not on the physical phenomena as such but on ontological differences as reflected in expressions and practices pertaining to indigenous Matsigenka people and migrants from the Andean highlands to the tropical lowlands, centring …

Seriously Laughing: On Paradoxes of Absurdity among Matsigenka People
Laughing and humour are of great importance to most people in their everyday life and these phenomena have attracted attention from many social thinkers. It has been noted that laughter often is provoked by something that is considered to be absurd and paradoxical. This essay focuses specifically on the meaning of laughter among Matsigenka people of the Peruvian Amazon. The paper discusses how absurdity is employed within narrative genres as a st…
Matsigenka Corporeality, a Nonbiological Reality: On Notions of Consciousness and the Constitution of Identity
Departing from the specific case of Matsigenka people in the Montaña of southeastern Peru, this article challenges some of the assumptions associated with predominant conceptions of Amazonian perspectivism. Examining different cultural registers such as birth rituals and mythology, Matsigenka peoples’ notions about being, soul, and self are discussed in relation to the importance that often is ascribed to physical shape for conceptualizing the wo…
Corporeidade Matsigenka: Uma Realidade Não Biológica Sobre Noções De Consciência E a Constituição Da Identidade
Transdimensional relations: On human-spirit interaction in the Amazon
Animism has been a topic of interest for some time, and several innovative approaches challenging earlier conventional perspectives have been presented. Inspired by the recent thinking on this classical anthropological subject, this article explores conceptualizations of the human-spirit, or transdimensional, relationship central to any theory on animism. Drawing on fieldwork among the Matsigenka of the tropical lowlands of southeastern Peru, con…
The Collective Self and the Ethnopolitical Movement: "Rhizomes" and "taproots" in the Amazon
The present situation in the Amazon is frequently characterized by political tensions between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. As a consequence, indigenous peoples are organizing in order to defend themselves and their land against the encroachment of representatives from the national society. To the Matsigenka, who live in the monta a of southeastern Peru, this process is relatively recent, and so is the conceptualization of ensuing confli…
The delicacy of community
Emotions are intimately associated with the person being affected, but as human beings are eminently social beings this means that others are also in£uenced. It is from this social perspective that I examine here the Matsigenka concept kisagantsi,1 which is commonly translated as &s;anger&s;, and the role which the public manifestation of this emotion plays as an indicator of the degree to which social cohesion and communal solidarity are threate…
Matsigenka myth and morality: Notions of the social and the asocial
This paper explores Matsigenka notions of morality as evidenced in central mythological texts. The focus is on myth since, it is argued, myths provide a means whereby fundamental conditions of everyday life as conceptualized by their conventional audience can be understood and interpreted. Although myth does not provide a uniformly accepted cultural blueprint of social reality, a certain intersubjective consonance is to be expected. It is argued …
In the Eyes of the Beholder: Leadership and the Social Construction of Power and Dominance Among the Matsigenka of the Peruvian Amazon
