The Evolution of the Parliamentary Debate on Political Violence in the Basque Country, 1980 – 2011
The paper concentrates on how the debate on political violence among parties sitting in the Basque Parliament evolved between 1980 and 2011. To explore this question, the Structural Topic Model —an unsupervised machine learning technique— is applied to transcripts of parliamentary debates. According to the content and amount of communication, three periods can be distinguished, namely 1980–1987, 1987–1998, and 1998–2011. Thus, 1987 and 1998 turne…
Theorizing exclusionary and inclusionary people-making: From narrative genres to collective learning processes
The article offers a normatively-informed theorization of people-making as a (blocked) collective learning process. More specifically, people-making, namely the mobilization of individuals into a collective actor, draws symbolic boundaries around the sovereign, thereby contributing to the imagination of ‘the people’ in more inclusionary or exclusionary ways. To account for differences along this continuum, Habermas’ notion of collective learning …
Towards a revised theory of collective learning processes: Argumentation, narrative and the making of the social bond
Societies change; and sociology has, since its inception, described and evaluated these changes. This article proposes a revised theory of collective learning processes, a conceptual framework which addresses ways in which people make sense of and cope with change. Drawing on Habermas' classic proposal, but shifting the focus from argumentation towards storytelling, it explains how certain articulations allow for collective learning processes (im…
Minimally Deliberative Deliberative Systems? Problematisation and the Deliberative Democratic Effects of Poorly Deliberative Communication
This article deals with the role of public communication in democratic decision-making, with a view to identifying communicative practices that can be expected to meet deliberative democratic standards. On the basis of two case studies, a mechanism is reconstructed through which public communication, although being poorly deliberative, can influence decision-making and achieve some of deliberative democracy’s most fundamental goals, namely, to at…

Narrative Deliberation? On Storytelling as a Necessary Component of Public Deliberation
This paper deals with the place of narrative, that is, storytelling, in public deliberation. A distinction is made between weak and strong conceptions of narrative. According to the weak one, storytelling is but one rhetorical device among others with which social actors produce and convey meaning. In contrast, the strong conception holds that narrative is necessary to communicate, and argue, about topics such as the human experience of time, col…
Dos aproximaciones a la racionalidad comunicativa: Analizando La Deliberación Democrática Y Los Procesos De Aprendizaje Colectivo
Political theory’s deliberative turn has provided novel theoretical insights, variously interpreted, into the rationality of communication. The goal of this research note is to clarify how these theoretical arguments and concepts have informed empirical research. To this end, a number of studies in this area are examined, and the argument is made that at least two research models inform empirical research, each of which embraces different methodo…
The Epistemic Value of Public Opinion: Theoretical and Practical Considerations
This paper discusses the claim that citizens lack sufficient political knowledge to make sound judgements on public matters. It is contended that practical judgements raise essentially two types of claims, namely a claim to empirical truth and a claim to normative rightness, and that there are good reasons to believe that people's insufficient political knowledge undermines both of them. Yet, an examination of the dynamics of public opinion forma…
The anti-immigrant discourse in Tenerife: Assessing the Lacanian theory of ideology
This article discusses the theoretical assets of the Lacanian theory of ideology and illustrates its analytical strengths by analysing the anti-immigrant discourse in Tenerife. However, this case study also highlights one of the shortcomings that haunt the Lacanian theory. It will be shown that this theoretical approach is unable to completely account for the grip of ideology. This is due—according to the argument made in this paper—to the psycho…
A iniciação científica no ensino superior
The Metaphor of One/Many: Towards a dialogical notion of personal identity (against ?postmodern? reductionism)
