Reflections on ecological social theory marking 50 years of E. F. Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful
While not primarily a social theorist in the classical sense, E. F. Schumacher’s interdisciplinary thought helped galvanise ecological social theory and the ecological movement more broadly. In this article, we introduce a special issue of the European Journal of Social Theory dedicated to engaging with E. F. Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful on its 50th anniversary. We provide both an overview of his life and work before locating Small is Beautifu…
The Sage Handbook of Survey Development and Application
The development of knowledge depends, in part, on obtaining theoretically structured self-report data. Since the introduction of the balanced, 5-point, agreement rating scale and its summated scoring logic (Likert, 1932), researchers have often adopted this approach because of its simplicity. Each response option system has an impact on survey takers; respondents tend to assume that the response options have been intelligently selected to frame n…
Meta-economics, scale and contemporary social theory
In this article, we argue that E. F. Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful offers important insights for contemporary social theory. In particular, we focus on the merits of his use of ‘meta-economics’ and of ‘scale’ as a means for advancing ecological social critique. While we are sympathetic to Schumacher’s approach, we are mindful of the limitations to his theoretical imagination and commence our article acknowledging his partisan metaphysics and hi…
André Gorz and contemporary Frankfurt School Critical Theory
We argue that Gorz's work offers a nuanced engagement with alienation that is instructive for contemporary social theory. In keeping with Gorz's broader politics, we contend that the utility of his framing of alienation derives from his insistence that progressive critique must challenge the ideal of productivism. We start the paper by presenting a sympathetic reconstruction of Gorz's understanding of alienation. Next, we explicitly detail the st…
Permacultures of transformation
This article examines a trend over the past two decades towards more explicit politicization in some areas of the ecovillage movement, particularly where covillages engage with related grassroots movements for environmental and social change. It does so using an expanded political ecology framework, also drawing upon 'Multi-level Perspective on Sustainability Transitions' and Gregory Bateson's Ecology of Mind. It argues that apparently apolitical…
EU Trade Governance and Policy
This article offers a critical analysis of EU trade policy. It does so by highlighting the political and economic enclosures within which EU trade policy is embedded and that continue to hamper more holistic and interdisciplinary analyses that are argued to be necessary in order to comprehend the obstacles to and avenues towards a more sustainable and socially just world. The article critically analyses economic and political hegemony by drawing …
The world trade organisation, social movements and global environmental management
When examining the role of social movements' attempts to influence international negotiations, most commentators have seen social movement activity within a simple frame and have concentrated on those groups that are engaging directly in the international policy process. Less attention has been given to others that are using different sorts of strategies. In fact, social movements adopt multi‐faceted approaches. Two different strategies to effect…
