  • The Uses and Abuses of the Anti-Colonial in Global Reactionary Politics

Open Access•Görkem Altınörs, Priya Chacko et al.•ARTICLE•International Political Sociology•2026

Drawing on a range of regional expertise and perspectives from international relations, political economy, political theory, and sociology, this collective discussion makes the following contributions to research on global reactionary politics and discussions of decolonization. First, we argue that the erosion of the legitimacy of liberal orders renders the anti-colonial language available for authoritarian and conservative projects in both the G…

  • Electroconvulsive therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder: Clinical efficacy and predictive role of inflammatory markers

Open Access•Shengkang Hu, Chenchen Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

ECT is clinically effective for OCD, seizure duration was significantly associated with treatment outcomes. Although baseline NMR was not statistically significant in multivariate analysis, it holds potential predictive value, possibly limited by sample size and study design. Future larger-scale, prospective studies are warranted

  • Clinical predictors of short-term treatment response in stupor: A retrospective study

Open Access•Xin Zong, Zhiqian Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

A higher chlorpromazine-equivalent dose and olanzapine use were associated with short-term therapeutic response in stupor, independent of ECT. ROC analysis suggested a data-driven, exploratory cut-off of approximately 108 mg (about 100-110 mg) chlorpromazine-equivalent, which should not be interpreted as a prescriptive clinical threshold. However, these findings are preliminary, limited to two-week outcomes in a modest retrospective sample. The r…

  • The Tyranny of Meritocratic Nationalism: Unpacking the Online Backlash Against a Tibetan Cyberstar

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang, Mingqiu Zheng•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2026•References: 39

This article develops the concept of meritocratic nationalism to unpack the online backlash surrounding the rise to fame of a Tibetan cyberstar, Tenzing Tsondu (Ding Zhen), on Chinese social media. Meritocratic nationalism not only embeds ideals of individual achievement, education attainment, and productivity within narratives of national identity and regime legitimacy, but also sustains structural inequalities through racialized and gendered as…

  • (Un)Civilizing the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: Competing Narratives of Civilization, “Coloniality,” and Transversal Alignment

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•Global Studies Quarterly•2025•References: 6

Scholarship on “non-Western” civilizational discourse in international relations remains largely limited to the versions crafted or endorsed by the state. This paper takes the representation of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Chinese social media as an entry point to exploring vernacular and competing narratives of civilization in global cultural politics. Drawing on data from multiple platforms, I scrutinize visions of civilizational prog…

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2024•Cited by: 3

This article seeks to deepen understanding of the global politics of reactionary discursive formations, which at the current conjuncture increasingly coalesce around self-victimising articulations of racial nationalism and a rejection of social justice struggles, often delegitimated as ‘elitist’ in Western core contexts or ‘Western’ in postcolonial spaces. Drawing on insights from feminist and postcolonial scholarship on racial entanglements, mas…

  • Borders, bordering and sovereignty in digital space

    Chenchen Zhang, Carwyn Morris•ARTICLE•Territory Politics Governance•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 18

The production of digital borders and the development of digital sovereignty have effects that are felt within the bordered digital spaces and outside of them. Digital borders are not just national borders, and the effects of digital borders can be analysed at a multitude of geographical scales, from the regional to the neighbourhood, and from the national territory to the bordered and bounded instant messaging group. The contributions to this sp…

  • Postcolonial nationalism and the global right

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2023•Cited by: 23•References: 13

How can postcolonial critique address the use and abuse of the anti-colonial in contemporary reactionary and ultranationalist projects in the Global Easts and South? Building on the literature on amalgams of authoritarianism, social conservatism, and racial nationalism beyond the Western core, especially the emergent scholarship on the rise of the digital far right, I reflect on the ways in which postcolonial critique can help us think about the …

  • Untargeted metabolomics of pulmonary tuberculosis patient serum reveals potential prognostic markers of both latent infection and outcome

Open Access•Xuezhi Wang, Zhuhua Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Currently, there are no particularly effective biomarkers to distinguish between latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and evaluate the outcome of TB treatment. In this study, we have characterized the changes in the serum metabolic profiles caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection and standard anti-TB treatment with isoniazid–rifampin–pyrazinamide–ethambutol (HRZE) using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. Seve…

Open Access•Wei He, Abdul Baess Keyhani et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2021

Understory vegetation changes, caused by forestry management, can alter the litter species composition and microclimate in situ, which while profoundly influence litter lignin degradation processes, is seldom investigated. To reveal the effects of these changes, understory vegetation in plots was treated as follows: no understory vegetation removal; only shrub removal; only herb removal; and, both shrub and herb removal. Open Access•Mimi Qiu, Chenchen Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Objective: Uncontrolled internet use may lead to the emergence of pathological internet use (PIU). PIU has become a global public health concern that can cause a range of psychotic symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and impulse control disorder. To date, we know very little about the principal biological factors related to PIU. Monoamine oxidase type A (MAOA) and serotonin (5-HT) 5-HT 2A receptor (5-HT 2A R) play critical roles in the devel…

    Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•Made in China Journal•2020

When Dr Li Wenliang died from Covid-19 on 7 February, the Chinese Internet saw an unprecedented outpouring of grief and anger. The universal mourning for the reprimanded doctor, who had warned his colleagues about a potentially infectious coronavirus in late December and had been silenced by authorities, was also an expression of the public anxiety [...]

  • Right-wing populism with Chinese characteristics? Identity, otherness and global imaginaries in debating world politics online

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•2020•Cited by: 73•References: 72

The past few years have seen an emerging discourse on Chinese social media that combines the claims, vocabulary and style of right-wing populisms in Europe and North America with previous forms of nationalism and racism in Chinese cyberspace. In other words, it provokes a similar hostility towards immigrants, Muslims, feminism, the so-called ‘liberal elites’ and progressive values in general. This article examines how, in debating global politica…

  • Mobile Borders and Turbulent Mobilities: Mapping the Geopolitics of the Channel Tunnel

    Chenchen Zhang•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 46

This article investigates the making and contestation of mobile borders around the Channel Tunnel, the fixed link connecting Britain and the European continent. It suggests that the bordering of the infrastructural and vehicular spaces is both an object of inquiry in its own right and a productive lens for reflecting on questions related to European Union (EU) territory, the heterogeneous nature of borders as well as the interplay between regimes…

  • The effect of music training on unimanual and bimanual responses

Open Access•Xin Chang, Pei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2014

Music cognition is closely related with some types of nonmusical cognition. Music training improves musical cognitive abilities, and also influences nonmusical abilities, especially motor skills. Through simple tapping tasks using visual stimuli, we explored whether music training had an effect on unimanual and bimanual responses and whether there were differences in bimanual synchrony between different types of musicians (pianists and singers) a…

  • Industrial citizenship, cosmopolitanism and European integration

    Open Access•Chenchen Zhang, Nathan Lillie•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 18

There has been an explosion of interest in the idea of European Union citizenship in recent years, as a defining example of postnational cosmopolitan citizenship potentially replacing or layered on top of national citizenship. We argue this form of EU citizenship undermines industrial citizenship, which is a crucial support for social solidarity on which other types of citizenship are based. Because industrial citizenship arises from collectiviti…
