  • A “hard question”

    Open Access•Paula Martins•ARTICLE•Feminist Anthropology•2024

Gender affirming care for youth is currently under political attack across the United States. Critics of affirming care often leverage a biological and fixed notion of gender as assigned at birth, which is at odds with how gender has been theorized academically for decades. Yet for some feminist clinicians, the popularized version of SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION present within rhetoric about the purpose of affirmative intervention also seems to undercut t…

Open Access•Fernanda Loureiro Silva, Fernanda Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article presents reflections on our experience with quilombola women, through the lens of the coloniality of power-knowledge. The text aims to challenge the contradictions we face as researchers (the place of power and knowledge) and as women (the self in its dimensions of race, gender, class, or labor). We describe the workshop we presented over four days with the participation of the quilombola women, as well as the quilombo community wher…

  • Cubical ethnography

    Open Access•Paula Martins•ARTICLE•Medicine Anthropology Theory•2020

Studying the contemporary clinic necessitates rethinking what it means to both enter and access 'the field'. In these Field Notes, I reflect on the beginnings of fieldwork and the processes of crafting research protocols which can stand up to formal ethics reviews. Rather than treating the process as a barrier to 'real' ethnographic research, I suggest that the mundane institutional realities of inserting oneself into a bureaucratic atmosphere fo…
