Handling multiple proxies
Substituting a proxy for an unobservable variable without further ado is common practice in applied econometric work. When more than one proxy is available, the question arises how to best handle them. Although the case often occurs in practice, the literature on this question is scarce. It started with Lubotsky and Wittenberg (2006) and was later on expanded by Bollinger and Minier (2015). We extend their work in various ways. We present an alte…
Missing data and imputation in the international studies following the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol
The current practice worked well in the HCAP studies. We include concrete recommendations on best practices for study design, data collection, and post hoc treatments to mitigate challenges due to missing data, and for use and reporting of the imputed HCAP data
Cognitive Functioning and the Quality of Survey Responses
Using Item Response Times in Online Questionnaires to Detect Mild Cognitive Impairment
RTs for survey items are a potential early indicator of CIND, which may enhance analyses of predictors, correlates, and consequences of cognitive impairment in online survey research
Identifying Cognitive Impairment Among Older Participants in a Nationally Representative Internet Panel
The results permit analyses of predictors, correlates, and consequences of cognitive impairment in web surveys where relevant cognitive test and functional abilities items are available. We discuss challenges and caveats that may affect the findings
Using Attributes of Survey Items to Predict Response Times May Benefit Survey Research
Researchers have become increasingly interested in response times to survey items as a measure of cognitive effort. We used machine learning to develop a prediction model of response times based on 41 attributes of survey items (e.g., question length, response format, linguistic features) collected in a large, general population sample. The developed algorithm can be used to derive reference values for expected response times for most commonly us…
How measurement error affects inference in linear regression
Measurement error biases OLS results. When the measurement error variance in absolute or relative (reliability) form is known, adjustment is simple. We link the (known) estimators for these cases to GMM theory and provide simple derivations of their standard errors. Our focus is on the test statistics. We show monotonic relations between the t -statistics and $$R^2$$ R 2 s of the (infeasible) estimator if there was no measurement error, the incon…
Sampling and Weighting the Understanding America Study
Asking about social circles improves election predictions
The Radical Left in Benelux
The small but densely crowded European states of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg have a long common history, in which they were sometimes united and later separated again. Linguistically, t
The Rand Continuous 2012 Presidential Election Poll
The RAND Continuous 2012 Presidential Election Poll (CPEP) was conducted within the American Life Panel, an Internet panel recruited through traditional probability sampling to ensure representativeness. Because the CPEP asks the same respondents repeatedly about their voting preferences, observed changes are attributable primarily to individuals changing their minds and not to random sampling fluctuations. The CPEP asks respondents to state in t…
Handbook of Multilevel Analysis
Measuring central bank independence
We argue that central bank independence (CBI) is a latent variable of which the various existing quantifications are imperfect indicators. We show how factor analysis techniques can be employed to assess the quality of the various indicators, and how an optimal weighting of the indicators can be obtained that gives the best approximation of CBI. We also show how these results can be utilized in models in which CBI is an explanatory variable. In c…
