  • Has Motivational Interviewing Fallen into its Own Premature Focus Trap

Open Access•Charlotte Hilton, Charlotte Emma Hilton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2016

  • Grounded Theory-Based Research within Exercise Psychology

Andrew Hutchison, Andrew J Hutchison et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Psychology•2011

This article critically reviews the current body of grounded theory research within exercise psychology. Previous evidence has questioned the quality of grounded theory research within this academic domain. Guidelines for assessing grounded theory research are presented based on the common defining characteristics of the methodology and other published recommendations for assessing qualitative research. The review identified 21 articles that repo…

  • Using QSR‐NVivo to facilitate the development of a grounded theory project

Andrew Hutchison, Andrew John Hutchison et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2009•Cited by: 25•References: 6

This paper demonstrates how the software package QSR‐NVivo can be used to faciitate a grounded theory approach. Recent research evidence has questioned the methodological quality of many studies that claim to utilise grounded theory. This paper argues that qualitative data analysis software can be used to encourage good quality grounded theory research by facilitating many of the key processes and characteristics associated with this approach. To…

  • Software and Method

    Lynne Johnston•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2006•Cited by: 15•References: 6

This reflective paper draws on a range of experiences developed over the last 11 years regarding the way in which qualitative data analysis (QDA) software (QSR NUD∗IST and NVivo) is taught and used within doctoral research. The existing separation of qualitative methods training from QDA software training can result in disconnected technical and methodological learning curves. This can cause a number of problems for doctoral students because a ‘m…

  • Using Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software to Develop a Grounded Theory Project

    Open Access•Joy D Bringer, Lynne Halley Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2006•Cited by: 52•References: 24

The promise of theory and model development makes grounded theory an attractive methodology to follow. However, it has been argued that many researchers fall short and provide a detailed description of only the research area or simply a quantitative content analysis rather than an explanatory model. This article illustrates how the researchers used a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software program (CAQDAS) as a tool for moving beyond…

  • Maximizing Transparency in a Doctoral Thesis1

    Open Access•Joy D Bringer, Lynne Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2004•Cited by: 17•References: 19

This article discusses the challenges of how to provide a transparent account of the use of the software program QSR*NVIVO (QSR, 2000) within a grounded theory framework (Glaser and Strauss, 1967; Strauss and Corbin, 1998). Psychology students are increasingly pursuing qualitative research projects to such an extent that the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) advise that students should have skill in the use of computer assisted quali…

  • Relationship between Machiavellianism, External Control, and Cognitive Style among College Students

    Open Access•Georgette K Maroldo, L C Flachmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

This experiment determined relationships between Machiavellianism, locus of control, and cognitive style. 115 subjects, 56 males, 59 females, ages 18 to 21, were selected from Interim students at Texas Lutheran College, Seguin, Texas. The M Mach IV test measured Machiavellian tendencies. The I-E scale measured external attitudes. The Object Sorting Test measured categorizing style and cognitive structure by having subjects divide 50-word represen…
