  • ‘Drilling down’ and ‘breaking glass’ – Evolving notions of public service ‘quality’ in the Norwegian health data space

Open Access•Tanja Plasil, Gunhild Tøndel et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2026

The datafication of healthcare and its implications for patients and practitioners are a topic of ongoing study. We suggest that analytic benefit can be gained by (a) unpacking the sometimes ordinary origins of the promissory claims, investments, and shifts in organizations and practices that often precede large-scale health data integration projects, and (b) centring analyses on how such projects relate to institutional shifts in normative conce…

  • Imagined foodways and rejected biopedagogies: Rural children's perspectives of rural foodways

Open Access•Ellen Margrete Iveland Ersfjord, Tanja Plasil et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2024

Rural residency is an independent risk factor for being overweight, but little is known about why this is so. The purpose of our study was to gain insight into what Norwegian rural children say about a rural diet in comparison to an urban one. Child‐friendly methods were used. We found a discrepancy between what the children said they eat – traditional, ‘healthy’ foods, and what they ate – largely ultra‐processed foods. We explored this by using …

  • When Heritage Becomes Horizon: The Acquisition of Extra-Territorial Citizenship among Lebanese in Argentina

    Open Access•Lorenzo Cañás Bottos, Tanja Plasil•ARTICLE•Revue européenne des migrations…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 21

The sedentariness of the nation-state (emerging from its territoriality) sets it at odds with human mobility of different types and scales, but particularly so with international migration. In this article we are concerned with the different strategies states deploy for the construction of nationhood and citizenry when faced with immigration and emigration. We focus on heritage and horizon to think citizenship practices as they relate to Levantin…

  • Natural ingredient or nostalgic taste? Competing authenticities in the Norwegian vanilla tastescape

    Open Access•Tanja Plasil, Håkon B Stokland et al.•ARTICLE•Norsk antropologisk tidsskrift•2022•References: 20

Vanillin has been the main source of vanilla flavoring in products such as vanilla sugar, sauce and ice cream throughout the twentieth century, and hence the authentic taste Norwegians associated with vanilla. However, over the last twenty years critics have pointed out that this taste is not made from the seeds of the vanilla plant, but is synthetic and industrially produced. In this article we explore the multiple modes of attribution of authen…

  • “Best before, often good after”: Re-Scripting the Date Label of Food in Norway

    Open Access•Tanja Plasil•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Science and…•2020

In 2018, several Norwegian food producers added a new phrase to date labels of packaged foods: best before (date), often good after. Why and how did they do this? By using two concepts from Actor-Network Theory, translation and script, this article reveals how a seemingly simple addition to a label can reveal underlying issues and policies. This case study sheds light both on how the script of the date label was used to translate UN Sustainable D…

  • Black boxing milk: Date labeling, quality, and waste throughout the Norwegian milk chain

    Open Access•Tanja Plasil•ARTICLE•Food and Foodways•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 29

We confront the expiration date whenever we shop, eat or discard food. This label has changed our foodways in profound and unforeseen manners, on the one hand increasing food safety while on the other reducing our sensory ability to judge food, thus leading to an increase in food waste. Only by understanding how the quality and expiration date of a product are interrelated and co-constructed by different actors, technologies and practices through…
