  • What Whorf Read and Who Has Been Reading (or Thinking) Whorf

    John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2024•References: 20

The Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges says that “every writer creates his precursors. His work changes our conception of the past, as it will change the future.” In his writings, Benjamin Lee Whorf cites a wide and eclectic set of inspirations—which is to say that he creates, retrospectively, a set of intellectual lineages leading up to him. Although some of these are scientifically respectable—quantum mechanics, relativity, colloidal chemistry,…

  • Changing of the Guards” as Recombinant Myth and Fragmented Epic

    Open Access•John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Cahiers de littérature orale•2023

“Changing of the Guards” is often considered one of Bob Dylan’s most obscure songs. This paper offers some elements of interpretation, in three parts. The first explores the evident presence of medieval/Romantic imagery and that of the Tarot cards and the suggestion of a fragmented mythic plot. The second part analyzes the song’s contrasting melodic and poetic patterns, which serve to reinforce the song’s sense of mystery and revelation just out …

  • The Shapes of Modernity: On the Philosophical Roots of Anthropological Doctrines

    John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Culture•2021•References: 12

While more and more anthropologists are conducting research on and/or in contemporary Western societies, little attempt has been made to characterize modern Western culture as such. The philosophies of Descartes and Leibniz, in particular, may be read as articulating ways of organizing experience that are typical of modernity. These “thought-forms” are still powerful both in everyday experience and in the social sciences, including anthropology. …

    John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Culture•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Whether societies without writing all share a distinctive mentality, orientation to the world, or single form of expression has been proposed and debated for several centuries. Since the 1960s, the debate has centered around the role of media technologies, with some authors maintaining that a change in the media of communication is the key factor in social and mental transformation while others argue for multifactorial analyses. While the presenc…

  • Baipurangi's dreams: The interface between ethnography and psychoanalysis in the work of Lucien Sebag

    Open Access•John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Lucien Sebag's "Analysis of the dreams of a Guayaki Indian woman" appeared in Les Temps modernes in 1964. Never before translated into English, and never reprinted even in French, it marked a unique effort to combine ethnography among the Aché people of Paraguay with structural theory and psychoanalysis. This essay is an attempt to help orient the reader of Sebag's work by sketching its context in the theoretical conjuncture of the times, in Seba…

  • Words and worlds: Ethnography and theories of translation

    Open Access•John Leavitt•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 28

If different languages orient the speaker toward different aspects of experience, then translation can be seen as a passage between lived worlds. This paper traces out some key moments in the history of translation theory in the modern West and argues that translation and ethnography require each other. Free of the constraint that professional translators produce easily digestible texts for the target audience, anthropologists are particularly we…

    John Leavitt•BOOK•Poetry and prophecy•1997

This very rich book presents a series of soundings at intersection of poetry and prophecy and invites us to examine how each may enhance understanding of other. The argument is marked by a lively tension between a Platonic view which locates poetry with inspiration, mantic and a type of dangerous and, for Plato, unwelcome confusion and Aristotelian tradition which understands poiesis as a kind of making and sees poetry as a craft or art. While Ar…

    Open Access•John Leavitt•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1996•Cited by: 184•References: 74

Emotion terms are used in everyday discourse to indicate experiences that involve both meaning and feeling, both mind and body. Most attempts to theorize emotions, however, tend to reduce them to one side or the other of these dichotomies; anthropology is divided between views of the emotions as primarily biological and as primarily sociocultural in nature. In this article I consider these approaches and propose three ways around the meaning/feel…
