About the Location of Ptolemais Thêrôn (Ptolemais of the Hunts) in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea
Ce papyrus in…
Networked spaces
The 34 articles published in this volume form the proceedings of the 9th Red Sea conference held at Lyon in July 2019, whose core topic was the “spatiality of networks in the Red Sea”, including the western Indian Ocean. In the networked space that the Erythra Thalassa never ceased to be, stable factors such as landscape, climate, and wind patterns have been constantly entangled with more dynamic elements, such as human activity. The contributors…
Again on the Elephants of Raphia
A recent DNA survey carried out in Eritrea provides the starting point for this article. It has been established that the elephants still roaming in the Gash Barka area are members of the species Loxodonta africana (or savannah elephant). This conclusion has unexpectedly challenged the commonly accepted opinion that the Ptolemies used elephants of the smaller species Loxodonta cyclotis (or forest elephant). This idea has long prevailed among hist…

Les Rois Hellénistiques Et La Transplantation Des Plantes À Aromates
According to some literary evidence, several hellenistic kings attempted to transplant spice trees to their kingdoms. Before them the kings of Assyria, Persia, and Egypt made similar efforts, and Alexander's successors may have imitated them. However, in my opinion, transplanting spice trees above all had more of a specifically Hellenic, ideological meaning than an economic purpose
