A Heritage Without Boundaries: Nature-Culture Synergies in and around Norwegian Protected Landscapes
We address the question of nature-culture synergies in protected mountain landscapes with a specific focus on the Norwegian National Park of Hardangervidda. Fragile and complex ecosystems developed from long-lasting socio-ecological grazing processes that started approximately 4000 years ago in Scandinavia are facing manifold environmental challenges and societal issues that endanger both natural and cultural heritages. Our goals are to clarify t…
The Rough Tor Effect: Early prehistoric monuments focusing on significant tors in Cornwall
A ceremonial monument cannot function without those people who carry knowledge of its metaphysics and practice, and it cannot continue into the future without instruction in its meaning. In this paper, we attempt to recover the meaning of Neolithic tradition as enacted on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall where prominent hills can be viewed at a great distance. It has long been recognised that hundreds of prehistoric monuments in Cornwall in some way 'pay …

Locations of Cornish cairns in relation to the Rough Tor Effect
Hundreds of round cairns and barrows survive on the granite uplands of Bodmin Moor, with hundreds more beyond the Moor, including along the Cornish coast. We posit that their distribution is far from random, or related merely to the territories of Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age people, especially as many Cornish cairns and barrows do not contain burials. Most of those in east Cornwall enjoy a direct sightline to Rough Tor, and Stowe's Hill i…
Back to the Beginning, and into the Future: Historic Landscape Characterisation, a Review from Cornwall
From the distance in time of twenty-five years since its initial development, this paper reviews Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC) and especially the approaches that determined its form when pioneered in Cornwall, its subsequent development and application, and its continued relevance, usefulness and value. It explores likely future developments and applications
Where Next for Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC)
This paper introduces a special issue on Historic Landscape Characterisation. It places in its wider context the development of HLC from the 1990s to the present, beginning with unpicking the implications for understanding and practice inherent in the meanings of the three constituent terms, historic (or historical), landscape and characterisation. The discussion includes consideration of society’s changing approaches to understanding, presenting…
