  • The Public Will End up Paying

    Moshe Schwartz, Amit M Schejter•ARTICLE•Javnost - The Public•2022

This study critiques and analyses the meaning and design of the term “public interest” as it has been constructed in commercial television policy in Israel. Its main thesis is that the term serves Israeli policymakers to achieve economic goals. This endpoint marks the transition the public interest consideration has undergone from its initial identification with national and state goals to its subordination to economic interests, in a particular …

Open Access•Did Boru, Moshe Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2014•Cited by: 3

Recurring droughts have induced many pastoralist groups in Africa to raise more drought-tolerant livestock as a coping strategy. Borana, traditional cattle pastoralists in southern Ethiopia, are one of these groups and have resorted to including more drought-tolerant camels and shoats (sheep and goats) among their livestock. We hypothesised that this livestock diversification would vary according to geographic location (drought severity, proximit…

  • On the Importance of the `Location Package' for Urban Growth

    Open Access•Boris A Portnov, Moshe Schwartz•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 21

Urban location is a multidimensional phenomenon: its dimensions are attributes, natural and man-made, which together affect urban performance. To capture their combined effect, the paper introduces the concept of `location package'—i.e. the set of location-related advantages enjoyed by an urban place, such as proximity to other population centres, climate and topography. The hypothesis is that looking at urban location as a package of attributes,…

  • On the Relativity of Urban Location

    Boris A Portnov, Moshe Schwartz•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Portnov B. A. and Schwartz M. On the relativity of urban location, Regional Studies. The effect of location attributes (e.g., topography, proximity to networks, etc.) depends on how much they stand out in their regional or national contexts. In a region or country where a given advantage or disadvantage are commonplace, they are likely to have lesser effects than where they are uncommon. Thus, cold and rainy places may repel would-be residents in…

    Open Access•Boris A Portnov, Madhav Adhikari et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Between 1952 and 2001, the number of urban settlements in Nepal grew from 10 to 58, while their share in the country's population increased from 2.6 to 14.4 per cent. However, the spatial distribution of urban growth was uneven. To find out how this unevenness was structured, a GIS-assisted analysis matched spatial reference data (such as distances between individual municipalities and major rivers, roads, international borders and major populati…

  • Internal migration and fiscal capacity of local authorities

    Asher Vaturi, Boris A Portnov et al.•ARTICLE•Space and Polity•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Using the Greater Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area as a case study, this paper studies the interaction between intrametropolitan migration and the fiscal capacity of local authorities. The analysis concludes that municipalities with high resident out‐migration generate higher per capita incomes than migrant‐recipient municipalities. This paradoxical situation may be due to the fact that non‐residential land uses yield higher local taxes than residentia…

  • The Effect of Public Financial Assistance on the Management of Moshav Economic Affairs

    Neal Sherman, Moshe Schwartz•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1991•References: 4

This paper analyzes the impact of public financial support on economic behavior in moshavim (cooperative villages). Until the recent (1986-1990) crisis of the rural settlement sector, the public institutions responsible for settlement were unwilling to allow a moshav to reach a state of economic breakdown that might lead to its abandonment. If debts reached a critical level, there was a high probability that emergency assistance would be provided…

  • Household Complexity in Nineteenth Century France

    William L Parish, Moshe Schwartz•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1972•Cited by: 17•References: 4

The study of family change during industrialization has been hindered by the lack of adequate historical data. This paper attempts to overcome this obstacle by further refining Coale-Burch measures that can be used with existing census data. It shows the validity of these measures for France, uses them to analyze the effects of land holding, agriculture, illiteracy, and dispersed settlement on household complexity, and then analyzes the effects o…
