  • Is Mobile Money Changing Rural Africa? Evidence from a Field Experiment

Cátia Batista, Pedro C Vicente•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

Rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa are typically underserved by financial services. Mobile money brings a substantial reduction in the transaction costs of remittances. We follow the introduction of mobile money for the first time in rural villages of Mozambique using a randomized field experiment. We find that mobile money increased migration out of these villages, where we observe lower agricultural activity and investment. At the same time, rem…

  • What matters for the decision to study abroad? A lab-in-the-field experiment in Cape Verde

    Open Access•Cátia Batista, David M Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2024•References: 12

Study abroad migration is the fastest growing international migration flow. However, the college completion rates of students from low-income countries are often modest in OECD countries, raising the hypothesis that these migrants are poorly informed about the costs and benefits of their decision. Our work tests this hypothesis by running a lab-in-the-field experiment where graduating high school students in Cape Verde are faced with incentivized…

  • Can Information and Alternatives to Irregular Migration Reduce “Backway” Migration from the Gambia

Open Access•Tijan L Bah, Cátia Batista et al.•BOOK•2022

Irregular migration from West Africa to Europe across the Sahara and Mediterranean is extremely risky for migrants and a key policy concern. A cluster-randomized experiment with 3,641 young men from 391 settlements in The Gambia is used to test three approaches to reducing risky migration: providing better information and testimonials about the risks of the journey, facilitating migration to a safer destination by providing information and assist…

  • Covid-19 and Changes in Intentions to Migrate from The Gambia

Open Access•Tijan L Bah, Cátia Batista et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Economies•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in border closures in many countries and a sharp reduction in overall international mobility. However, this disruption of legal pathways to migration has raised concerns that potential migrants may turn to irregular migration routes as a substitute. We examine how the pandemic has changed intentions to migrate from The Gambia, the country with the highest pre-pandemic per-capita irregular migration rates in Afri…

  • How has Covid-19 Affected the Intention to Migrate via the Backway to Europe and to a Neighboring African Country?: Survey Evidence and a Salience Experiment in the Gambia

  • Migration, risk attitudes, and entrepreneurship: Evidence From a Representative Immigrant Survey

    Open Access•Cátia Batista, Janis Umblijs•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 28

Do more risk loving migrants opt for self-employment? We use a novel vignette-adjusted measure of risk preferences to investigate the link between risk aversion and entrepreneurship in migrant communities. Using an original representative household survey of the migrant population in the Greater Dublin Area, we find a significant negative relationship between risk aversion and entrepreneurship. Our results show that the use of vignettes improves …

  • Do Migrants Improve Governance at Home? Evidence from a Voting Experiment

Cátia Batista, Pedro C Vicente•ARTICLE•The World Bank Economic Review•2011

Can international migration promote better institutions at home by raising the demand for political accountability? A behavioral measure of the population's desire for better governance was designed to examine this question. A postcard was distributed to households promising that if enough postcards were mailed back, results from a survey module on perceived corruption would be published in the national media. Data from a tailored household surve…
