  • Shadow Education Uptake in Ireland

Selina Mccoy, Delma Byrne•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 46

This paper assesses the role of shadow education (SE), i.e., organised learning activities outside formal schooling, in the lives of secondary school students of different social backgrounds and in different school settings, in a high-stakes context. It draws on multilevel analysis of longitudinal Growing Up in Ireland data, alongside narratives from in-depth case study research in 10 schools. Framed within a social reproduction approach, we show…

  • Gender stereotyping in mothers’ and teachers’ perceptions of boys’ and girls’ mathematics performance in Ireland

Selina Mccoy, Delma Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Review of Education•2022

Parents' and teachers’ beliefs and evaluations of young people are important. Using a feminist institutionalist perspective, and drawing on rich data from one in seven nine-year-old children in Ireland, this paper examines mothers’ (who make up the overwhelming majority of primary care-givers) and teachers’ perceptions of boys’ and girls’ mathematics performance. The evidence shows that girls’ mathematics performance is underestimated by both rel…

Using data gathered from WP students in two selective universities in Ireland and England, we explore how …

  • Seven Principles for Assessing Effectively Maintained Inequality

    Open Access•Samuel R Luca, Samuel R Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 48

Effectively maintained inequality (EMI) was proposed as a general theory of inequality, but the theory flows from a decades-long tradition of studying social background effects on educational attainment. After an orienting discussion of several historic challenges of the study of social background effects on educational inequality, proposed and adopted solutions to those challenges, and subsequent critiques of those solutions, we offer and justif…

  • Effectively Maintained Inequality in Educational Transitions in the Republic of Ireland

    Open Access•Delma Byrne, Selina Mccoy•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2017•Referencias: 14

While it is well established that the structure and organization of the education system affects youth transitions, less attention has been paid to the study of qualitative distinctions at the same level of education over time in the Irish context. Using data from the School Leavers' Survey over the period 1980-2006, this paper considers the hypothesis of effectively maintained inequality in the case of the Republic of Ireland. The data capture y…

  • Born abroad and educated here

    Open Access•Seamus Mcguinne, Delma Byrne•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2015•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 44

This paper examines the wage and job satisfaction effects of over-education and overskilling among migrants graduating from EU-15 based universities in 2005. Female migrants with shorter durations of domicile were found to have a higher likelihood of overskilling. Newly arrived migrants incurred wage penalties which were exacerbated by additional penalties resulting from overskilling in the male labour market and overeducation in the female labou…

  • Cumulative disadvantage? Educational careers of migrant students in Irish secondary schools

Merike Darmody, Delma Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Race Ethnicity and Education•2012•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 7

Recent rapid immigration of a diverse group of migrant children into an almost exclusively White Irish school population makes Ireland an interesting case study for migrant education. This article explores key points in the careers of migrant secondary school students in Ireland from an equality perspective. The article draws on data gathered as a part of a large-scale study specifically designed to investigate provision for migrant children in I…

  • The Determinants and Effects of Training at Work

    P J O''Connell, Philip J O’connell et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2012•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 22

This article brings together two research fields: work-related training and high-performance work practices (HPWP). We estimate models of both the determinants and the impact of training. Our models of the determinants of training confirm previous research: age, education, contract, tenure, and firm size all influence training. Several components of HPWP are associated with a higher probability of training, specifically general (non-firm-specific…

The review examines the relationship between educational research and policy, from the post‐war period to the present, throughout the United Kingdom. Its purpose is to (a) illuminate the changing relationship between education research and policy, and (b) to clarify the different ways in which that relationship is understood. Its overarching purpose is to enable the education research community to locate current debates about research and policy …

  • Language Approaches Used With Deaf Pupils in Scottish Schools

M Grimes, Mark I Grimes et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2007

In this article we address "language approach" data as a key variable in quantitative, large-scale research on educational achievement, focusing on our work for the Achievements of Deaf Pupils in Scotland (ADPS) project. The complexity of approaches is addressed, with a particular focus on a "no-exclusion" model of service. In this context 3 years of language-related data are discussed, using constructions of language variables that take into acc…
