The Interplay Between Natural Resources, Non-Renewable Energy Consumption, and Financial Development: The Role of Renewable Energy Consumption and Globalization
This study investigates the effects of natural resources, non-renewable and renewable energy consumption, financial development, and globalization on environmental quality, while also incorporating industrialization, economic development, and trade openness into the model across developed, developing, and emerging economies over the 1985 to 2019 periods. Using dynamic fixed effects (DFE), dynamic seemingly unrelated regressions (DSUR), and the dy…
Decoupling dynamics: How pricing strategies influence growth and carbon emissions in Europe
Greenhouse gas emissions are among the serious threats to the sustainability of the global economy. In an effort to curb the environmental impact of economic activities, the European Union (EU) has proposed and implemented various policies. One example is the carbon pricing policy. This study examines the impact of carbon pricing and non-carbon pricing policies on the decoupling of economic growth from carbon emissions in the EU. We examine the E…
Will reducing the service trade barrier improve environmental performance in OECD countries
The rapid expansion of the global economy poses a serious threat to the environment due to the ever-increasing demand for fossil fuels. While trade can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants in the absence of appropriate environmental regulations, it can also be a crucial tool in addressing the climate crisis and other environmental challenges. This study empirically investigates the relationship between several factors and e…
Economic performance and carbon emissions: Revisiting the role of tourism and energy efficiency for BRICS economies
Increased demands for infrastructure, water, electricity, and different natural assets have triggered land erosion, climate change, and pollution increase and deterioration in biodiversity. The purpose of this research is to look at how economic performance, tourism, renewable energy, and energy efficiency affect carbon emissions in the emerging economies of BRICS during 1990–2021. Using panel estimation approaches, the empirical outcomes validat…

Men of prowess and women of piety: A case study of Aceh Dar al-Salam in the seventeenth century
Studies on leadership in Southeast Asia's early modern era have tended to centre necessarily on men, and in particular, on O.W. Wolters' concept of ‘men of prowess’. The concept of female leadership is still little researched. This case study of Sultanah Safiatuddin Syah of Aceh (1641–75) provides some insights into female leadership in the Malay-Muslim island world of Southeast Asia. Contrary to the received view that successful leadership tende…
What happened to Sayf al-Rijal
Sayf al-Rijal is the least known Sheikh al-Islam, the highest religious appointee in the court of Aceh Dar al-Salam, in the seventeenth century. Yet, he replaced the renowned Sheikh Nur al-Din in 1643 and in turn was succeeded by another famous ulama Abd al- Ra'uf al-Sinkili in 1661. As of date, there is very little information on al-Rijal and his writings after he won the struggle against al-Raniri and was appointed as the Sheikh al-Islam by Sul…
Ties That Unbind: The abortive Aceh–VOC alliance for the conquest of Melaka 1640–1641
This article examines the reasons the kingdom of Aceh under Sultan Iskandar Thani failed to assist the Governor-General Antonio van Diemen to conquer Melaka despite repeated appeals. The failure seems strange when evidence shows that Iskandar Thani was favourably disposed to do so and the Acehnese had sought to be rid of the Portuguese since 1537. Contrary to the belief that Iskandar Thani was merely engaged in delaying tactics rather than assist…
